Ok have another question, the boys want to take a football to throw on the beach and I know the site says no athletic gear but wondered if this would be allowed? Yes only for the beach not to be taken out of the room otherwise.

Where are you seeing "no athletic gear"?

The prohibited list only says:
  • Potentially dangerous sporting equipment, including baseball and cricket bats, hockey and lacrosse sticks, pool cues, ski poles, fishing gear and archery equipment. (Golf clubs are permitted as long as they are stored inside your stateroom.)
I don't see anything else referring to athletic gear.

I will point out - I'm not sure they'll find a large enough area to throw a football around. There are lots of people on the beach, and no big empty areas for that sort of activity.

There may not be room on the beach, but there would be room on the "runway" path between the family beach and the outlook tower//serenity beach areas.

OP didn't say what beach. The beaches I have visited in St. Martin, St. Thomas, Cozumel, Grand Caymans have plenty of room. I have also seen people throw footballs, etc at Castaway Cay.

The packing list does indicate a general no "sporting equipment" in the "What not to pack" section (https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/guest-services/cruise-packing-list/). However the more specific Prohibited Items list (https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/faq/prohibited-items/list/) indicates only "potentially dangerous sporting equipment" such as PrincessShmoo lists above. I'm going to say it's a toss-up depending on how strict an agent who scans your luggage. If they take the football, just be prepared that it may be confiscated (you can pick it up at the end of the cruise).

Enjoy your cruise!

Unless you give the football to whomever is checking the bags and threaten to tackle them, you should be okay.

Thought they may consider it sporting equipment and we were lucky enough to get a cab

Well if I can't do this what's the point of taking the football! :rotfl2:
