Foot Washing at a wedding

Wedding planner here. So far, I've only had one couple do the foot washing. The groom washed the bride's feet at the reception. He wasn't sure how to set it up. He'd just heard about it being done at other weddings and liked the idea. After a little research and some wedding planner magic to turn it from an idea into a nice little ceremony, it went off without a hitch or spilled water.

I asked the groom why he insisted on washing her feet. He wanted to show the world that he would take care of her.

:scratchin Makes sense if they are devout Christians trying to incorporate the symbolism of the original event. The entire point of that was to demonstrate that a leader serves, rather than seeks to be served.

That's what our pastor teaches all the time: a leader (e.g. pastor, husband, father, boss, manager, etc.) is a servant! DH has this on his desk at work.

You’re absolutely right about promise vs purity rings. They called it a promise ring at my cousin’s wedding. It was given to her by her parents and she promised to save herself until marriage.

Funny you should mention wine. They had a dry reception. There was dancing at this reception, unlike her parents’. They only had chamber music.

Last thing I would ever do is discuss my sex life or lack of it if I choose that with my parents- just so weird.
I would have "something suddenly came up" moment if I had to sit through a reception with no dancing and chamber music LOL- could get through one with no alcohol if had to (though alcohol is the only thing that makes those things bearable LOL) but it's a hard NO to no dancing and chamber music LOL.

Just curious...could the “leader” ever be female?
:scratchin Weird question actually but I'll take a stab at it. Mothers lead their children; single mothers are often entirely responsible for leading their households. Women teachers/professors of all kinds lead and shape countless lives over the span of their careers. Women in the scientific community lead teams to discovery and advancement. Women own and manage businesses or rise to management roles in their professions; leading whatever staff or contractors fall under their purview. Women hold political office and lead with whatever authority is within their jurisdiction. Women are volunteer leaders in social activism, community involvement and ministry. Women, especially in our culture, lead in countless other ways I can't think to concisely list.

In a purely Christian context, a wife does not lead her husband, nor is she his servant. Given the symbolism that's been explained, would any of us feel comfortable watching a woman bowing before her husband? :rolleyes1

It was “weird” to me that the poster I quoted used her DH as an example of a leader rather than herself. Had she said, “I have it on my desk.” I wouldn’t have asked the question.

It was surprising to me that a woman today would use that example. I was raised in a very conservative Christian doctrine but no longer believe that men are the heads and leaders of the church or home. To me that represents the culture at the time and Lord knows it’s been a long and still ongoing struggle for woman to gain a measure of equality.

BTW, happily married for almost 40 years and DH would say that we are partners in this endeavor.

OK. Some of us still believe it though. No need to debate it as this forum does not allow discussions specifically about religion. :wave2:

Did you go to one of the 19 Kids and Counting weddings and you're just playing it lowkey?

OT for the actual thread discussion but--It doesn't necessarily have to even be on a religious aspect though I understand the exchange in earlier comments was of a regligious aspect. In terms of your personal viewpoints you'd be more aligned with Christian Egalitarianism but that's as far as I go on that topic.

I used it as an example because it is a fact. DH has it on his desk at work. I don't have it on my desk because my desk is at home and just about anything on it ends up on the floor sooner or later thanks to the cats. :)

Didn’t realize that I started a debate. I simply asked a question. You chose to label my question as “weird” so I felt that I needed to explain the reason I asked it.

I don’t know ... but as an atheist the whole discussion about someone washing someone else’s feet is really all about religion. So, the entire discussion is about religion. And fascinating, BTW.
