Foot Injury and wheelchair

On my last trip to WDW my foot started bothering me, after coming home and a trip to my doctor I have an extra bone in my foot and had to wear a boot.

Now when I do a lot of walking now, my foot still bothers me. Last week when I was on vacation in Nashville (a lot of walking was done) I ended up having to put my boot on. Now on to my question:

I am headed back to WDW in December and I don't want to be in the pain I was in last year, so I am definitely taking the boot with me, but would it be just as easy to rent a wheelchair because the boot can get heavy and tiresome and sometimes it isn't the easiest to walk up or down ramps with?

I am leaning more and more towards renting a wheelchair because in case my foot "doesn't like all the walking".

you can rent ecv's at Disney or offsite at a place like Randy's. There is a lot of walking so it might be a good idea.

thanks for your input. I will keep that in mind. I probably will just rent from Disney as on an if needed basis. I don't want to ruin the trip for my friend that is going with me if I have to stop and sit to let my foot rest. Last year another friend was there also, so they went walking while I sat for a while. This time it will be just the two of us.

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information, including in Post #2 for people with mobility/stamina problems.

Or, if you want an easier route to the FAQs, click on the link in my signature.

It would probably be better to have an ECV with you all the time. Check out the FAQs that tell about rental places and do a search on previous threads. There is a lot of walking at the resorts and Disney doesn't guarantee that an ECV will be available for you to rent from them. Also, if you leave and return (or park hop) there may not be one available. The last thing is that Disney's ECVs are slower and more difficult to handle than the ones you rent off site.

If you rent off site, you can always park in the stroller parking if you want to do some walking.

OP mentioned renting a wheelchair, but not wanting to inconvenience the friend who he/she is going with. If your friend has to push the wheelchair in the heat, that would be rather inconvenient -- WDW isn't as flat as it seems.

I definitely agree with the recommendation to rent an ECV.

Since we are going in December, I am not sure the heat will be a problem (although it could be). My friend would be willing to push if need be (she is a GREAT friend). I just have the problem of standing in one place for a long time on my foot. This is why I would definitely need my boot.

Thanks Cheshire Figment for the information...will definitely have to check it out!!!

I am trying to put off the surgery as long as possible because it would be another 6 to 8 weeks in the boot for healing. From what I have heard from others that have had that surgery, it is VERY painful!!!!!

I started out with a manual wheelchair on the first day, but ended up calling the company to switch to an ECV that night. There are just too many hills and ramps that you don't notice until you're trying to push an adult in a wheelchair up them! It wasn't working either for me to push myself or for my friend to push.

Thanks everyone for the advise, but I think what I have figured out is I could probably just wear my boot and be ok. If I start getting tired I can see if there is a wheelchair available to use, but I can walk pretty much ok with the boot on (ramps give me a little problems).
