I bought in direct with Poly for 150 points, which I'm very happy about.
When I was originally considering resale, I narrowed my search down to BLT and CCV. This was a combination of price, being at a resort you want to stay at (proximity to MK was big), and the ability to take advantage of the 11-month window (both resorts have some in-demand rooms only available to those with home resort priority).
However, now that I own at Poly, I start to think about future resale and have the following thoughts:
1. If I want to add on a small amount, say 50 points, I don't see the value in adding on at BLT or CCV. 50 points will get me next to nothing, so the 11-month benefit at those resorts is null. So if I can truly only use those points comfortably at the 7-month mark (combined with my Poly points), then why would I buy BLT or CCV when I could just buy something super cheap like Saratoga?
2. To counteract point #1, I'd need to buy something sizable like 150 points at BLT or CCV. This essentially gives me a 2nd home resort where I can comfortably book at least 6 nights in a Studio at the 11-month window before deciding if I want to upgrade to a 1-bedroom at the 7-month mark. This obviously has a much higher cost than simply adding on 50 points.
If I am only in camp #1 (wanting to add a small amount), then I keep coming back to "why would I ever buy 50 points at Saratoga if I'll never stay there? I mine as well buy the 50 at Poly so my 11-month window has even more power than before. Then I look at Poly resale prices and realize why this isn't the best idea. However, if I owned say 300 points at Poly, that puts me in a much better position to do as close to 1-week in a 1-bedroom at the 11-month mark (i.e. lock it up) before I see what I can get at the 7-month window. But with 1-bedrooms being one of the most available room types at the 7-month window, maybe I'm overthinking this. But the cost of Poly resale is so high that it would seem so silly to buy 150 points there JUST for the increased 11-month power when I could own at a place like BLT or Animal Kingdom for far less money, and still get a place with desirable rooms that get gobbled up at the 11-month mark (Value rooms for AK or standard view studios at BLT).
This seems to be a big con of having bought at Poly that I never really thought about. Thoughts?
