I just booked four nights at the Desert inn later this month and this will be our first time staying in a hotel in a LOOOONG time and first time for the kids ever (1,4,7). I was hoping some of you might share what kinds of foods/snacks you take to your hotel rooms. I've read they have a breakfast of cereals, milk, juice and fruit, but also heard its pretty gross :confused3 I can bring instant oatmeal, mainly just something to hold them over till we get in the park and stuff. I'd like to hold them off till lunch if possible but I'm not sure if my planning skills are that good seeing as Im a first timer. Been to disney many times because we live fairly close but never stayed and tried to make it a vacation, so I'm kinda clueless.

weird question...Is there ice available at the Desert Inn?

We always get some pastries or bagels and cream cheese(even though there's no toaster) A box of favorite cereal and milk. Also, lots of drinks and bottled water. Some snack food for rest time in the afternoon too.

We like to bring yogurts, bagels and cream cheese, peanutbutter or Nutella, snack stuff like crackers, trail mix, cheese sticks...don't forget juice boxes and/or waters. Basically, anything that your kids like in their lunch box works well. For us, we like to save $$ by being able to have one or two meals at the room. Breakfast every day will save $$ if you're not eating out.

GL :goodvibes

Does the hotel room have a fridge? We stayed at the HoJo and are staying there again and they have mini fridge. We got individual yogurts. My kids like cottage cheese too. We like to start with some sort of protein like that. Sadly, we'll also probably get a box of PopTarts as a special "we're on vacation" treat. Granola bars. Maybe something like Carnation Instant Breakfast? We'll get cereal especially because our baby will be eating Cheerios. A box of graham crackers? I'm trying to think of morning-y things. Ummmm, I liked your oatmeal idea. We'll get bananas for the baby and one of her brothers. We love Target's brand of fruit leather so we'll bring those.

Just throwing some ideas out there. Sorry I'm kinda rambling...I'm thinking of these for my upcoming trip too so I'm kinda thinking out loud...and typing it. :)

After many trips to DLR that include extended hotel stays, I've learned to bring lots of things that WON'T stop up little tummies. When we are at Disneyland for more than one day, everyone in our group seems to get pretty umcomfy tummies if we eat more than one meal per day in the parks. Around the DisBoards I've heard people call it "Disney Tummy".

So, we bring a lot of snack type foods, such as: fruit leathers and applesauce cups, thin sliced carrot sticks, oranges, apples, raisins, yogurt-covered raisins, etc. We usually give the kids a granola bar, banana, and yogurt for breakast (and often times they eat everything but the yogurt while standing in line while we wait for opening...).

We also bring tons of water bottles (water is the only thing we drink while in DLR in our quest to avoid "Disney Tummy"). Painful tummies are NO fun during a Disneyland vacation.:sad2:

We don't eat out hardly at all, and when the kids have junk food, I try to make it as healthy-as-possible junk food, so this is what I'm trying to avoid. I have a list compiled and have gotten several more ideas from this thread, thanks. I don't want to catch Disney tummy.

We have stayed at the Desert Inn & Suites twice and we really like it. The continental breakfast isn't gross at all, just pretty basic. They always have one type of fruit (apples or oranges), two types of cereal (cheerios & corn flakes) & milk, toast and danishes, orange juice & some other fruit type punch, coffee (not very good). We fill up on their breakfast and are good until lunch. They have a large-size mini fridge in the rooms and a coffee maker and a microwave so you can pretty much have a real meal in the room. I like the oatmeal idea - I forgot to bring it on our last trip. Have a great trip!

I've been told by Desert Inn that they don't start breakfast until 7:30 am. Just wanted to let you know so you don't count with it if you want an early start in the parks.

Add to the above suggestions....Clementine oranges, string cheese, Zone Bars (or other high protein meal replacement bar---seems to "stay with you" longer than a regular granola bar).

That should be ok for us, if we do end up doing MM we'll have breakfast in the park or on the go. Im hoping to keep the kids on their same "home schedule" My kids spaz out when their schedules get disturbed, we've never been a fan of daylights savings in our house because of it.

This is good to know, my kids will eat any of those items :thumbsup2

Have you seen those piggies in blankets that now come in a full size and look like a corn dog? They come frozen but do not need to be kept frozen. Its a sausage link wrapped in a pancake, looks JUST like a corn dog. Heat in micro for 1 minute and can be eaten on the way to park. My son loves them.

When we travel, each of my kids carries his own fanny pack with snacks inside for when hunger strikes. We couldn't possibly all get hungry at the same time, right? I take individually portioned nuts, raisins, apricots, pretzels, trail mix, etc. Usually I'll have a sweet snack option, like cookies or fruit snacks, but I like to encourage the healthier options. That limits, but does not eliminate, the number of times they ask us to buy them something. Multiple food stops can really eat into your day, he he, pun intended. This has worked well for us, not only at Disney, but also on other family trips as well. As far as hotel food, I like to get an assortment of fruit, crackers, cheese, salami, bottled water, gatorade, and perhaps an adult beverage or two. :drinking1

I got a soft-sided insulated bag (a little bigger than a lunch tote) and filled it with apple slices, go-gurt, individually wrapped cheese slices... put an ice pack in and packed it in the suitcase. Then, I used the same bag in the stroller for taking snacks to the park.

Since breakfast foods are provided at your hotel, that's great! What I did was buy a carton of rice or soy milk that didn't need to be refrigerated until opened. Packed that too and then used it to feed my kids cereal every morning since we had a fridge in the room.

I also brought a can opener and some canned chicken with condiment packets I picked up at Safeway and DH and I had chicken sandwiches in pita pockets (which also traveled well). Another tip would be PB&J in the pita pockets. We also had various dry snacks (nuts, dry cereal, protein bars).

I figured that the room in my suitcase that was occupied by food on the way there would be filled with souvinEARS on the way back! It worked well for us!

Peanut M&Ms and beer.

For breakfast: (this plus a mid morning snack will hold us over until lunch usually)

Yogurt, instant oatmeal, fruits, cereal & milk

Snacks (in room breaks and take to park)

Frozen gogurts (great to take to park), crackers, granola bars, string cheese, fruit snacks, mini carrots, apples & oranges, capri suns, waters, juice boxes

We are bringing :

Beef Jerky - 8 packs
Mixed Nuts - 1 can
Fruit Snacks - 1 box
Muffins or another type of pastry - 1 box
Microwave Popcorn - 1 box (3/pk)
Juice Boxes (packed away in our checked luggage) - 1 box (10/pk)

Last year when we stayed at Hojo, we went to the gift shop and purchased sodas and kept them in our refrigerator. This came in so handy after a day in the parks. We were tired and thirsty, but had something to drink already in the rooms.

Last time we went was the end of March and it was Cold at night. I remember how great it was to come back to the room and have some hot chocolate. We had a microwave and I brought sigle serving packets.

What time does the Desert Inn open for breakfast? Thought I read elsewhere 7:30 or 8:00 - making hitting it before getting out to the park for opening difficult for most of March...

We like to get a package of the Glad-type reusable bowls with lids to have in our room. They can be used to eat cereal in the am, portion out chips or snacks in the pm, pack up sandwiches to take to the park, pack up sliced veg etc.
We do hotels as a family quite a bit and find them so handy.
Even to pack up leftover pizza from the night before to take as lunch the next day!
