Hello All

Random question. I am taking snacks on the plane with me as I can't buy anything on board the plane due to having Coeliac Disease

Can I take the food into the airport with me if I don't eat it all? (I am sure it won't be a problem as DH and DD are food monsters!)

Thanks in advance

You have to buy and food you take on the plane airside. You can't take it through security with you. You then need to leave any leftovers on the plane.

I partly disagree with the above response - DH and I take our own food from home and always manage to take it through security. It's only water and other drinks / liquids that you have to get airside.

However, I do agree that any meat and/or dairy in your sandwiches needs to be either eaten on board the plane or left on the plane when you disembark.

You can take crisps, sweets, cake etc in with no problems.

Last year my friends daughter accidentally took her cheese sandwich off the plane with her at MCO and promptly then got stopped and searched! She was 12 at the time and in fairness no one told her not to. You will need to leave any leftover food on the plane.

You'll be able to buy some food at the airport in the UK that's suitable (lots of places are getting much better with the gluten free options now) and you can presumably request a gluten free meal on the plane.

I always take food through security with me as I just plain don't like the food on planes! never had a problem, the only restrictions is on liquids, so you'll have to buy drinks airside. you won't be able to take any dairy/meat products into the US so any leftovers will need to be left on the plane. If youve got snacks like crisps or chocolate left, you'll be allowed to take those in

Thanks everyone.

I have a letter from Gatwick telling me it's fine to take food through, which is printed and in my hand luggage.

I'll make sure the food is eaten before we disembark.

Thanks again.

You can take food through security at airports both here and in the US. You can not take liquids through.

As for taking food in to Florida - again you can if it is declared on your customs form unless it is prohibited such as fresh meat, dairy, fruits or vegetables.

If it is processed and packaged it is generally allowable but as long as you declare it even if it isn't you won't get into trouble.

We always carry snacks through both ends and I declare on entry to the US. (We take tea bags for friends too so I need to declare them anyway)

This is simply not true.

The security restrictions only relate to liquids.

On landing you need to leave fresh food on the plane as that is prohibited anything else is generally allowable as long as it is declared.

Daft question but if you take say a ham sandwich with you for the flight do you declare that on your customs form or not. I know you can't take it into the US. We preclear in Dublin so will do all that bit before we land in the US.

It's just prohibited items that are not allowed off the plane. The white form that gets given to you either at check in or on the flight states what can/cannot be taken into the country. (So her parent or guardian signing the form should have known it couldn't be taken in). Most flights I've been on also usually announce on landing what cannot be taken in. We often have various bits with us we take through, as long as it's allowed and you declare it then there is no problem.

I once had some fruit in my bag all flight. I left it on the plane but the sniffer dogs repeatedly kept coming back to my bag anyway. :)

Then not sure why we had food taken off us at security four years ago? I had a large bag of fruit and it was all confiscated? Manchester airport. So. For me. It simply was true I'm afraid.

Fruit isn't allowed. Generally speaking most pre packaged food is fine unless it contains meat or fruit/veg.
Fresh stuff is the exception to the rule

Thanks just never really sure so we tend to stick to buying once we get through. we declared bars of chocolate we were taking as gifts and whiskey the boarder guard laughed and said she wanted to come to that party LOL
