Food you make or eat "wrong"

My Dad was born in North Dakota on a farm. They used to have Johnny Cake and he taught us how to make it…But…. Come to find out it is not Johnny Cake. I made it for my husband who is from Virginia and he was shocked and showed me what real Johnny Cake is. I still love ours which is… crumble corn bread into a glass add sugar, raisins and milk. Enjoy.
You win post of the day....🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🥇🥇🥇🥇 after research... you are definitely eating it wrong... but that's okay....my Mom called upside down pineapple cake carrot cake 🥕 🥕 🥕 and I have looked in bakery every where for that carrot cake all my life.... Richard Harris sung it right

I love to mix in extras to ranch dressing to give it even more yumminess. My favorite mix in are Franks Red Hot sauce or some Old Bay. The old bay and ranch is the best with onion rings!! I like mozzarella sticks with buffalo sauce instead of marinara.

I craved buffalo sauce on everything when I was pregnant with my son. He has always loved spicy food and has even completed the Buffalo Wild Wings hot wing challenge, he did it with his friends and he was the only one to finish on time. He ended up eating all the super hot wings his friends didn’t. What’s funny is I didn’t crave it the same way when I was pregnant with my daughters.

My mother always made 'green bean casserole' with spinach instead of beans. I had no idea that wasn't how everyone made it until I was an adult. I made it the same way when my daughter was little. I don't think I've ever made it with green beans.

I will have to try both of these.

I love red horseradish cocktail sauce on my fried calamari, no idea where I picked it up but tomato sauce isn't my fav for this.
Just can't choke down the milk after eating cereal, not a fan of plain milk in general but def not with cereal bits, I use very little.
Not the biggest fan of an ice cream scoop, I use a spoon and sort of slice off flat slivers from the top of my own container a little at a time, it stays colder this way.

My sisterinlaw, a true Southerner, always crumbled up the cornbread after buttering it and putting into the milk glass. She always ate it this way. I've never tried it yet.

For the enchilada debate, I've lived in TX for nearly 30 years and it's very uncommon to find them made with anything other than corn tortillas. Most Google searches also echo this information. We have an enchilada specific restaurant here in Houston...chef has been on various Food Network shows showcasing her enchilada expertise... and everything on her menu is corn unless otherwise noted. Same goes for a lot of the places that serve up authentic street tacos. That being said, there are some fillings and sauces that I could see working OK with flour.

As for what I eat weird or wrong...
- I like to dip my fries in mayo
- I like canned ravioli cold...straight from the can
- I don't like any utensils for sushi and treat it like finger food. Dumplings are the same.
- I put Chinese Five Spice on my vanilla ice cream (it's REALLY GOOD)
- this is a NJ thing and may be tied to how my town's diner did it, but I like my Disco Fries with Cheddar and American. Mozzarella alone is just bland to me.
- I like eating cheesecake frozen
- While I'll make an exception for good NY style pizza with legit crust, I often just eat the cheese and toppings.
- I like ketchup on crab.

My FIL was a Texas native. Lived 50 miles east of Houston the last 50 years of his life. What you are describing.........to me....................is TexMex, not traditional Mexican food. TexMex to me tends to be a lot spicier, and have other differences, so I don't doubt they use corn tortillas. Hard shell facos I would expect to be corn everywhere though.

I’ve never seen authentic Mexican enchiladas made with anything but corn. Using flour is likely a Tex-Mex conceit, akin to Americans serving meatballs with spaghetti, something you don’t see in Italy.

The ideas of spice/heat in Mexican food being somehow inauthentic is poppycock.

There's definitely a lot of TexMex here, but it's my understanding that a lot of the street taco places here (not chains like Torchy's) are taken from the norms in Mexico City. This is our #1 go-to for those.

This is the enchilada place I was thinking about...

All in all, very little of what we get when we go out locally for Mexican is spicy. We went to one of our closer to home spots the other night and between the birria tacos and the carne guisada, there was very little heat to anything. I've never been a fan of hard shell corn tacos, but I love a fresh soft corn tortilla.
