Food you can take

I totally agree with Boo!
Half the fun of going abroad is sampling the foods/ culture. Its a poor 'do' if you can't find food you like in America.
I was 4 on my first trip to the US, and believe me, it was a real culture shock back then! We didn't have cars in the UK, where you sat three people comfortably in the front seat!!
I'm reliably informed that I tried all sorts of food and drinks (didn't always like everything) - corn on the cob (for the first time), sloppy joes, root beer to name a few!
I was the first in the queue when McDonalds first opened in the UK - not for the burgers, but for the root beer!!
My kids will now try different things, which I'm glad about. That's why my DS loves the Fruit Loops!! I know they are heavy in sugar, but for two weeks of the year I'll make an exception. After all, he eats Weetabix every morning normally!!

We are quite similar then.... I first went to the US when I was 6 (that is 26 years ago :scared1: ).

Root beer, grape soda, Dr Pepper, proper cookies, proper burgers, french fries, proper thick milkshakes, huge salad bars, Teppanyaki, good seafood... not to mention (non-food) waterparks and miniature golf.

I still remember my disappointment, though, when ordering "something & chips" and getting my meal with "crisps" on the side of the plate... :rolleyes2

On my first trip to the US, we drove from Greensboro (North Carolina), down through South Carolina, Georgia and ended up in Florida. That was in a HUGE American can with one long front seat (so, like you mentioned, all three of us could sit in the front). I still remember bits of it :)

We, as a family, have never taken any food with us when travelling (no matter where in America, Europe, Africa, Asia or Australasia we have been). So I guess I find it a bit odd... We also don't tend to snack much on holiday either - so crisps and chocolate are not a big things for us.

Even though I was 17/18 when I went to Florida for the first time I was readily prepared to try everything! The Subways over there are almost the same as ours but with subtle differences...they use different cheeses, amazing cheeses! and they have so much more variety that I just HAD to try something they had over there that we didnt have here...and the seafood is amazing (once you learn how to pick the best bits off a lobster, you never forget)...i tried buffalo which was gorgeous and a great many things I wouldn't normally eat over here....

When we got home and my mum tried to make me eat some pasta thing with anchovies I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole....my mum replied "but you ate it in America"....I responded with "yes but it was Olive Garden mum...not Chez Nottingham!"....I felt a bit bad, but olive garden a red lobster do work wonders with pasta and seafood respectively!

Didn't want to give the impression my kids don't 'embrace' american culture!;)
But when ds tried Fruit loops acouple of years back, we had to scrape him off the ceiling!!!! And he's usually pretty sensible for a 6 yr old.

We 'embrace american culture' and enjoy shopping for our villa supplies at Publix...with one exception, Bisto gravy! when they have a product that compares I will embrace with open arms..until then it goes in the suitcase - not for me I must stress , for Josh. ;)

I know what you mean, Johnny.
My aunt has lived in the US since 1950's (originally from Thornton! - my uncle went to Baines School!), and they missed Lyons Treacle Syrup!
We once had a complete disaster in Cleveland Hopkins Airport, Ohio, when the flight from JFK was obviously not pressurised! Yes, you've guessed it... the tin of syrup had popped, and syrup was pouring from the suitcase when we were walking through the airport!! Not recommended!
They also missed Terry's chocolate oranges, and real fruit cake!

:)

I think there is nothing wrong in taking the odd thing with you and in addition I am not ashamed to say I always buy a couple of tins of Heinz Beans from Publix...naturally most things on everyone's shopping list are readily available out there but if having gravy makes it easier cooking for Josh then that will do for me.

Oh my!!! :rotfl2:

It's never what to take foodwise that causes problems for us it's what to bring back. We have to do a 'big shop' just before we come home for the families favourite foods there's usually 2 or 3 boxes of Lucky Charms, Peanut Butter Ritz Bits, Wild Cherry Pepsi and DH's collection of assorted chocolate peanut butter products to name but a few. :)
