We're trying to plan a trip this fall and want to go to both the Food & Wine festival and MNSSHP. It doesn't look like 2014 dates are out yet. Any idea on when to expect that we might know the dates?
We're only planning on 5 nights in mid-October so I think we'll definitely be fine for Food and Wine but I want to make sure we're there on a MNSSHP night!
Last October, there was a party every Thursday and Friday, but on only two of the five Tuesdays. The hours for October should be up mid to late March, and you can tell what nights the party will be based on what nights MK closes at 7:00. For a five night stay, I can't imagine that you wouldn't catch at least one party.
The Food & Wine Festival usually begins the last weekend of September. I'm sure you'll be able to get to go to MNSSHP at least once in your 5 day trip. The parties are usually offered Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in October.
Can someone give this newbie the lowdown on wine and food festival? Do we get the dining plan, or exactly how does the wine and food festival work? Do you buy tickets? Help, we are so confused!!

No tickets to buy for the Food and Wine festival, just bring lots of $$ so you can try lots of things. Basically all it is, is in each country there will be extra booths set up outside where you can try different offerings of food and wine from that country/area of the world. Very casual, but World Showcase can get crowded when it's going on, especially on the weekends! HTH!!
BTW, I can't remember if some of the booths accepted snack credits from the DDP or not. I'm thinking not, but maybe someone else can confirm.

The basic F&W activities including the food booths, a few demonstration areas like the Cranberry Bog, merchandise for sale and the Eat to the Beat concerts are included in your Epcot admission. There are 45-60 minute low cost seminars featuring chef demos and/or wine tastings everyday at the Festival Center (the former Wonders of Life pavillion). Also, there are many more expensive events (e.g. regional lunches, dinners, dessert parties, the Party for the Senses).
The snack credits on the dining plans can be used to purchase any non-alcoholic food or beverage item at the kiosks. You cannot use the counter or table service credits at the kiosks.
Not sure what you mean by buying tickets other than you need a park ticket to get in. You pay at the kiosks for you food and beverages with cash, credit cards, gift cards. In fact the F&W has a gift card on the expandable elastic bracelet to wear around your wrist that you can buy.
Not too much info has been released on the 2014 festival, but every year there is a dedicated thread on the Dining forum that one of the forum's moderators will start when more news on this year's festival is announced. In the meantime, here's a lot of information on last year's to give you some idea of what to expect: http://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2014-epcot-food-and-wine-festival/
