My family has a 7am departure for an upcoming vacation. As a family of 5 and already spending a large amount on this trip I'm looking for some areas to save.

I'm looking for people who have experience bringing mini meals through security. I'd like to pack simple breakfast box for us to eat once we are waiting to board.

Thanks 😊

Oh incase it matters, we are headed to Mexico, not US. We plan to eat everything before boarding.

Really the only thing you can’t bring through security are liquids. That includes things like peanut butter. Unless it’s within what you are allowed and is put in your liquids bag.

Things like muffins, cereal bars, dried fruit would all be ok.

We have brought through security and onto the plane, food items such as grilled cheese sandwiches, roasted chicken wraps, leftover pizza, mainly because family members have food allergies and it means one less thing to worry about before/during/after our flight.

Same here. Food allergies means always traveling with food. Everything is pretty much okay except liquids. If you want to pack something cold, you can keep it cold with frozen peas as a cold pack since cold packs are a no-no (liquids).
Also be mindful that you might be asked to not consumer peanut products on board if there is an anaphylaxis allergic child nearby.
Have a wonderful trip!

I did not know this! Thanks for the tip, frozen peas are a great idea.

I always brought home made banana bread for my kids when they were younger, usually in a small clear hard plastic container.
It travels well and is just hearty enough to stave off the "hangries".
This was just in case we were ever running behind (more often than not LOL) or if the was no place to purchase food, especially on long flights.
Somehow it became a bit of a tradition and now as young adults they do it themselves.

I did just want to add that it does indeed matter. Mexico is an easier thing because you don't clear customs until your destination, so you only need to worry about liquids. For the US, you are clearing US Customs before the gate and the food import restrictions apply there. There are some strange restrictions on food imports, and some documentation requirements that could be hard to meet (got a label for that pepperoni on your leftover pizza?) Anecdotally it appears that these are seldom enforced at air crossings, more often at land crossings, but staying within the rules is always a best practice. The link below is to the Customs and Border Protection article on personal use foods:

I think the issue at hand is that if they decide to search you and find one of these restricted imports, you could get into some trouble, although it's more likely that they'll scold you and have you dump the prepared food.

With that said, we always bring some packaged foods with us to snack on. Cup noodles, while not the healthiest thing in the world, is quite filling and can tide you over until you get to your destination. Found this out the hard way on my honeymoon when we discovered that American Airlines is The Worst in terms of having onboard food options (read: none).
