Food stamp benefits for a family of 4 in my state are at $668 per month. Why do I get so upset when I spend $600 plus a month in groceries then? I'm always trying to cut my budget and think that $500 should be enough. I guess I am under budgeting and expecting too much for too little money??? I think I will make that my new monthly food budget and we will eat really well. My DH may even get steak once a month.

I don't mean this thread as a slam toward food stamp recipents. I just found this information out and I am really rethinking what is/should be healthy eating.

I think it would be very difficult to feed a family of four healthy meals on $668.00 a month. That is less than $6.00 per day per person. My heart goes out to anyone who has a rough time feeding their family, and paying their bills.

I used to work at a grocery store and people with food stamps DID tend to buy better food (better cuts of meats, more name brands). Maybe because they had to spend it all on food (for example with regular money whatever is left you can use for whatever you want, but not with food stamps.) They would usually come in and buy HUGE amounts at the beginning of the month and by the end the people with foodstamps tended to be buying just milk and bread. (There were tons of abuses though, but I won't steer the thread that way...)

Since we are from the same state I guess that is probably the same amount here. It does bother me that many in this area cannot afford food yet always has money for cigarettes. The ones in line in front of me yesterday at the store were not not even married yet expecting another child and covered with tattooes. It bothers me the most because I know several families that make a couple of dollars over the limit and they go without so much just so they can feed the family.
There is also a lot of fraud happening but slowly some are getting caught and prosecuted.

See that's the thing...I cut coupons and buy the sales and get so obessed about buying food cheap. Now, we do buy some organic and I always have fresh fruit, some fresh veggies, but also frozen and some canned veggies (that's all my mom cooked, I try not to as much).

I think my realization is that I may too obessed with the amount I spend on food. I never buy steak because I think it's too expensive (plus, I'm not a fan of much red meat). I have also stopped buying fresh fish because of the cost. I live in rural KY and for $668 a family of 4 can eat very well. When I really stretch it I can feed my family on $100 per week and still have fresh fruits and veggies.

I'm going to stop stressing so much about my food budget in the future I think!

I don't know, we spend about $350 on groceries and we live in the midwest, like the OP. I think if I almost doubled the food budget we would be eating quite well. My DH's cousin is a constant food stamp user. He has become dependent on the system and after many times of trying to help him give up, it is apparent this is what he has chosen. He has been 'thinking about getting a job' for two years.

Anyway, he doesn't see budgeting for food the way we do. He buys all ready to eat stuff (he doesn't have a stove/pots/pans. He's had them, but abandons wherever he lives whenever he has mental episodes).

This is a really complex issue though. My own mom got foodstamps a short period of time growing up, and she bought us healthy meals and then we got off of them. I feel bad for anyone really struggling.

I guess I am just not that nice. I kill myself to try to keep my food budget between $75-$100 a week (family of 4 adults, 1 on the way) because it is all we can afford. I clip coupons, watch sales and go without some things I would really like.

I am a checker and make the salary of a checker at Walmart and see people on food stamps eating much, much better than me, and getting all the snacks and things I would like. It makes me bitter at times. Flame me, tell me it's a bad attitude...I don't care. The abuses people take, and it's not one person it's over and over and over. I'm not saying it's everyone, but it's really unfair.

My measly paycheck is overtaxed and my taxes are being used for this, and it pisses me off.

I feel like CobraBubbles does...there is just too much fraud for me to feel a lot of sympathy for some food stamp recipients. The "system" has always been open for abuse, but more people are aware of how to do it now. For example, a parent of a daycare child was pretty proud of herself for taking all her jewelry off before going into the welfare office last month, so I could not help asking her if anyone noticed her $50 nail job! They also do not know she lies about her boyfriend living with her. The government is paying for her daycare vouchers, her 1-year-old's formula and food for her and her parents(her food stamps total over $700 per month). She apparently also gets some sort of check every month(near the first) as well...that's when she gets her hair and nails done! She and her boyfriend feel entitled to benefits because they are "poor". She received financial aid to go to school, but dropped out, because it was"just too hard going to school with a baby". But she refuses to apply for a lot of jobs because they don't pay well enough...only here could beggars be choosers! When she goes to the grocery store, she buys the best cuts of meat(they grill steaks at least once a week), deli meat, and "convenience foods" (like Velveeta mac and cheese, canned vegetables, etc.), but mostly she buys snacks(Doritos, Coke, cookies, etc.) And she's not the only food stamp recipient to shop this way...a lot of them do. They would not know what a coupon was if it hit them on the head, and they have certainly never heard of a budget. And just when I thought this parent could not sink any lower, she tells me she thinks she's pregnant. I do know of people who are struggling to feed their families, but because they own their home or more than one car, they do not qualify for food stamp benefits. It's like they are being penalized for trying. For anyone who really uses the food stamp benefits as a "crutch" until things improve, I apologize for sounding harsh. No one should have to go hungry, especially someone who has paid taxes in the past. But I get pissed off, too, when I cut coupons, budget, and plan menus based on what I can afford, while some irresponsible teenager collects food stamps, WIC, and medicaid! She was able to get the Guardasil shots for free(which she obviously needs), but my teenage daughters could not because our insurance won't cover the $660 cost for all three shots. That would be almost $2000 for my family, in addition to the deductible and office visit charge. She takes her child to the doctor all the time "cause it's free", just to get the office note if she called in sick to work(when she works). I think anyone applying for food stamps and medicaid should be required to take a budgeting class before they can collect a dime, and they should be subject to visits from a nutritionist. If I have offended anyone, I apologize...I know it's a sensitive subject. Just think how well a family on food stamps could eat if they used coupons or planned menus in advance?

Healthy eating is healthy eating and has little to do with how much you spend total, so OP, if you feel you're doing something right, don't worry about your grocery bill! :goodvibes

The less I spend on food, the healthier I eat. REAL food doesn't cost that much. I bought four items at a local, organic grocery store today - and the total was $2.83. I asked the cashier twice if she had rung me up properly! :lmao:

I agree there's a lot of abuse of the system, but it also helps a lot of families out. We can't know everyone's story. The day they are buying steaks may be the day they're celebrating the new job that will get them off the food stamp rolls next month!

$668 does seem high. When my family had food stamps (2 adults and a toddler), we had $278/month. I was thrilled; one less thing to worry about!

We spend way less than that a month on groceries, and we eat red meat several times a week! DH eats steak 2 times a week on average, I can't stomach it right now but I used to eat it just as often. We're on a budget too, I'm a full time grad student and he's enlisted. Just because we're not wealthy doesn't mean we can't eat well. I know things will change a little when our baby gets here, but not by that much. We have leftovers after almost every meal, so I know that we'll have enough food for another one, staying on our same budget. BTW, here the amount they get monthly for a family of 4 is 542 a month.

It may seem like a lot but most of the time food stamps does not cover the grocery bill for the month. I know this first hand having grown up in a poor family that needed the extra help. Those buying expensive cuts of meat are supplimenting their grocery bill with cash or going without by the end of the month. I know someone that is getting food stamps right now as a family of 2unemployed adults and they get under 100.00 a month. How is that enough food to live on for a month? 600 + may sound like a lot for a family of 4 but depending on where you live it really is not all that much. Esp. if you eat healthy. Fresh fruits and vegs. are not cheap.

It must vary by state because here in PA you can own a car and your own home to receive food stamps. Cash assistance works a little differently as they do count all assets toward that. Also medical assistance works differently. I know people with retirement funds can not receive medical assistance but can receive food stamps.

Not all food stamp/welfare receivers abuse the system. Some people really truely need it and have worked hard all their lives and deserve it. But like with anything some people if they can find a way to abuse it they will. I agree it is sickening and makes you mad but you can't lump everyone in the same category.

At WIC they do have nutritionist to help you out. They give out receipe cards as well for healthy meals. Also in the summer they give you certificates for the farmers market. WIC is great in that they only allow you to buy certain items that they have preapproved as healthy.

When I was pregnant with my second I was put on bedrest at 24 weeks, then had a premature baby. My spouse was a full time student. I applied for food stamps as we had virtually no income. We got about $300 a month for a family of 4. I am always bothered by these posts. Someone posts and now everyone thinks that all food stamp recipients are getting over $600 per month. It is all calculated on a case by case basis. If you qualify for the max in food stamps it is because you really don't have anything else. Most people do not get that much in food stamps.

Because of illnesses and other issues going on in our home four years ago we were on food stamps. We did own our home but the equity we had in it was almost zero. We also owned cars but both were old and basically had no real value. We had no savings or other assets so we qualified. At the time we received $623/month in food stamps as well as WIC vouchers for a family of five.

I've never in my life spent that much on groceries. I'm a bargain and coupon shopper. I'm sure some people were upset when I bought shrimp kabobs while on food stamps but I had coupons for $1 off any seafood and the kabobs were $1 each - I had them package each one individually so they were actually all free. When I purchased a more expensive item it was because I had a coupon or rebate to go with it.

We never intended for our food stamp usage to be long term so I shopped the best I could. I did spend all the funds we had but I used them to stockpile on deals. Once we were both able to return to work our benefits ended immediately but we had daycare expenses the first week and didn't get a paycheck for two weeks. The transaction was difficult when you have no savings so at least I had a stockpile of food to help carry us until we had regular income coming in.

I don't know if it is easy to defraud the system but in our case we were only using something that was available to help us when we needed it. I began paying taxes when I was 13 and dh when he was 15. It was not that I felt entitled but I didn't feel wrong using the benefit.

It is also important to remember that not everyone on food stamps has the benefit of shopping deals. Many have no transportation or live in areas where there are not options. I have four different large grocery stores within four miles of my home as well as a bakery outlet, a super Walmart, two meat markets and a produce stand. In the inner city area of my city there are absolutely no large grocery chain stores in the area and many of the residents of the area must rely on buses for transportation. The only option they have is to shop at the corner store which charges far more than my groceries for the same items. For those food stamp recepients the money won't go nearly as far as I could stretch it.

There is no way it costs that much to feed a family. I can feed my large family for less than that. There needs to be education and guidelines. IMO, it should work more like WIC.

This is exactly what I was going to post. I don't know who these people are that get over $600 a month.

I worked for a local non profit that did FS applications. We live in a very poor rural area. Some families that came in only qualified for like $16 a month. :confused3 My sister has almost no income and gets under $200 a month in food stamps for she and her DD. She also gets health insurance. She does not get any money for other living expenses. My sister budgets absolutely everything. She does not buy clothing for herself or ever go out.

I also don't think that $600 is a huge amount. I spend more than that on average each month (family of 5) and I think I'm a pretty smart shopper. I look at the sales each week and only buy most items when they are on sale. I plan my menus for the week (usually around the sale items). We only eat fresh home made items. Nothing pre-packaged. No "junk" food. I cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for all of us. I never spend over $1.99 for any type of meat. I also don't buy much meat (other than chicken) because my parents have a farm and give us meat for free.

I know in IN it's more than $700/mth for a family of 6 (I believe that's max benefits). Every once in a while I will go off about it to DH because I simply can't fathom spending $700/mth on food. We would have no place to put it all! LOL That's more than double our current budget for groceries. We would have to eat expensive steaks and such to use up all the money w/o massive stockpiling.

Groceries simply don't cost that much here to be giving out such huge amounts.

They should be putting those funds to educating people on how to shop, how to cook and nutrition. Maybe then this state wouldn't have such an epidemic of obesity. :sad2:

ETA~ http://www.in.gov/fssa/dfr/3097.htm that's the IN link and I was incorrect the max amount for a family of 6 is $952/mth. Simply mind boggling! And I ran the quick benefits calculator and my family would qualify for food stamps, cash assistance and healthcare. ;)
