Food Portions

I was looking at the menus on Allears.net and was wondering about the portion sizes.

I live in a resort town so the prices are actually a lot less then I would normally pay for dining out. But any time I have traveled to the US I found the portions were much larger then in Canada. Is this also the case at Disney?

I think more so in the sit down restaurants than the counter service.

It does depend on where you are. At Whitewater Snacks, the portions seem pretty big. DH and I split a chicken sandwhich or nachos. At Award Wieners we each paid $6 for an ordinary small hotdog. At Bengal BBQ you can order as many skewers as you want to fit your appetite. I get one beef and one veggie and I'm full. At Riverbelle we split a turkey sandwhich that came with sides.

We do often try to split things though because
1. We don't want to walk around and go on rides stuffed.
2. Having smaller meals lets us have rooms to try different things.

The Plaza Inn fried chicken dinner is easily enough for two people too. The pasta at Rocket Redd's also a big portion- easy to share with a salad too.

I feel that you can easily share meals at lots of places. We always split at Redd Rocket's (chicken fusilli and bread). We could easily split a Monte Cristo at Cafe Orleans or one of the platters at Rancho Del Zocalo.

Is the Big Thunder BBQ still open? People have recommended it but I can't find seem to find the info on it anywhere.

Yes, at some places the portions are a lot bigger than here. We really noticed this with the drinks We ended up wasting a lot of money and food on one trip because we did not know this and were ordering separate meals. We learned quickly and now we share most things - which works out because if DS gets hungry again, there are lots of things around to snack on

It took until our fourth trip to finally realize that we can share meals (and certainly fountain drinks) and not go hungry! (although my eleven-year-old son is a little harder to convince) I have also found that at counter service restaurants, a child's meal is often more than enough for me.

On our first trips, we ordered so much food, that the thought of having between meal snacks never even occurred to us. I now know that we have been cheating ourselves, by missing out on all those fabulous, one-of-a-kind Disney snacks!

Yes it is. It's no longer a character meal, but still an all you can eat meal. The menu should be on allears.net.

We definitely share, especially sodas. Last time I brought in small plastic disposable cups for the kids to split their soda. They got to each fill their cup at least twice for one large drink.

I find portions are usually so large that we can eat 1 sit down meal and munch the rest of the day on fruit, a churro or pretzels. Now if my boys go, that's another story! $$$ is spent on 3 meals a day plus snacks
we recently ate at lucky fortune cookery in DCA they give you like a quart of rice! No way could we finish it

The last time we went (over Christma/New Years) I found that the portions had shrunk (but not the prices).

At Plaza Inn, I find getting kids meal and a small salad is just right.

this Dining Review thread has lots of photos and descriptions of meals and snacks throughout the park and can probably give you an idea of what would be good to split.

we are also fans of meal splitting to try lots of different things. gotta save room for a mickey ice cream bar!

I live in Whistler where some of the events are. We already are feeling the major presence of the games, it is not going to be a positive experience for residents.
