Food Poisoning? (Don't read while eating)

While at Disney last week, we ate at the American Adventure CS at Epcot for dinner around 6:00. At around 10:00 when we were back in our room, my DD starts to complain about her stomach hurting (she said it hurt for us to touch it so we were worried about appendicitis but now we just think it was bad cramping). A few minutes later she vomits pretty violently, feels better, 10 minutes pass, vomits again, feels better, drinks a little juice, 10 minutes pass, vomits whats left in her stomach, says she still feels bad but falls asleep. She doesn't wake up again until the next morning and acts like nothing ever happened. Perfectly fine and we go to the parks.

The family had shared water all day long and as of today (week later), no one else has gotten it.

All she ate at Epcot was chicken nuggets and fries which is what another DD had (but did not share). She also had part of a brownie from Captain Cooks about 30 minutes before throwing up but my other DD finsihed it off and never got sick.

Now, I'm not looking for a lawsuit or compensation from Disney or anything like that, I am just trying to figure out if this was food poisoning or a virus of some kind that the rest of us just missed. Webmd was not very helpful so I thought I would turn to the Dis Community.

Thanks.

True food poisoning isn't over and done with in a couple of hours, your daughter would have been sick for days.

It's hard to say what it could have been....but I doubt very much that it was food poisoning.

I'm glad she felt so much better the next morning and that it didn't impact your trip too much! :wave2:

Thanks Lynne M. for the clarification I thought food poisoning was quick and went away once you got "it" out of your system. Now I'm wondering what she got that the rest of us didn't get. I shared a water bottle with her not two hours before she got sick but never got anything.

Maybe something did not sit right with her - I was at a fair once and had a corn dog and di not feel right for an hour went home and threw up laid around for a few hours and then felt much better... I am not a dr but I also have a sensative stomach and as a teen had an ulcer and sometimes would throw things up-

alot of people in WDW equals alot of germs! My sis did get food poising from narccoossees on our last full night and was sick for about 48 hours having to spend the last day in the room after begging GF not to charge us 400 plus because she got sick there made for an interesting flight home and an excuse to go back because we lost a day and a half.
sounds to me like it could have been anything from germs to a funky food issue wash those hands in WDW people the germs are everywhere :)

Food poisoning is so hard to "diagnose." It sounds like it could have been, but it also could have been some type of virus. Think of all the germs around Disney, from ride vehicles to handrails.

It could also have been in something she drank or something on a plate or glass that was not cleaned properly. I got very sick once from ingesting polluted water (I was swimming in an outlet from the local reservoir-hate to think what I actually ingested) but I was violently ill for about 24 hrs, bad stomach cramping, tummy sore to the touch, couldnt keep anything down including liquids for that 24 hours, next day with the exception of feeling worn down I was fine.

My son was sick a couple of weeks ago, start vomiting every ten mins. the next day he was fine. no one else in the house got sick and my daughter or I will always catch something from each other, right now I am sick, then my DD got it now my DS has it, so see it is a pattern with us, but with this vomiting issue no one else did get it. The same thing happen with my little cousin vomit every 1/2 hr. the next day fine and no one else in her family got it. I think it is just an illness going around.

Virus.

Even a mild cast of food poising will involve several hours of misery - and most likely throw in some nice diarrhea between vomiting bouts. A more serious case is a truly unforgettable experience that will never be mistaken for a stomach virus.

Agree with others. What we call "food poisoning" indicates illness usually from Salmonella or E. coli. This takes more than a couple of hours to cause illness and it is several days before you recover. Food intoxication is definitely a possibility though. This is caused by Staph. aureus toxins and would probably be difficult to pinpoint the source exactly. Another possibility is sensitive stomach. When I go on vacation, I usually feel a bit weird (stomach-wise) at first, because at home we eat simply and rarely eat in restaurants. It is an adjustment.

True food poisoning does not occur until about 10-12 hours or longer after the food is ingested. It could actually take days to happen. And trust me, it takes hours to a day or two to pass. THe two items she ate really aren't usual for that illness. THey are frozen and then deep fried. Very unlikely. The juice you gave her probably did not help due to the acidity in it. In a situation like that, just let her sip water to stay hydrated and nothing else until it is gone.

This is not true. Food poisoning can begin anywhere from about two hours after ingesting whatever it is that makes you sick. Depending upon the item a few forceful bouts of vomiting can clear it from your system. Depending upon what your daughter ate it could be an improper holding temp or cross contamination from another source. Generally a virus won't clear that quickly. It sounds like something she ingested made her sick. It happens. Sorry to hear she was so miserable, though.

Wow, thanks everyone. the things you learn on the DIS are amazing. Sounds like she just had a bad reaction to something.

GoodFairies: "Food Intoxication", I never heard of that before but actually sounds like something I would want to get (I like to eat). :drinking1

Dizfanz: Yeah we know the juice wasn't the best choice but she refuses to drink any water becuase she hates it. Our only other choice was Orange Juice so we went with the Capri Sun.

1) I must go along with the others.
2) I have seen a lot of "food poisoning" at WDW.
3) Almost always turns to be a virus or other germs - not food poisoning.
4) Don't forget
. . . WDW is a place with LOTS of people every day
. . . some are bound to carry germs or have colds/flu
. . . all guests touch railings, door knobs, etc
. . . many kids then put their fingers to their mouth or eyes or nose
. . . eyes or nose are easier entry points than the mouth
5) This comes under the heading of misclassification.
6) People claim to have Montezuma's Revenge after a Mexico trip.
7) What they have is eating strange foods and a body system not used to it.
8) Once in a while, they pick up a small touch of something.
9) True Montezuma's Revenge is due to enterotoxigenic organisms.
10) It is so bad is can become deadly without medical attention.

NOTE: If it were true food poisoning, then your son would have been ill, too.

Have to go with the majority here. Food poisoning can occur as early as 2hrs like one of the posters mentioned. It usually includes more than just vomiting and can last more than a day although it just depends. I think I got it once from a casserole that I ate. I got sick about 5 hrs after and felt weak the next day.

I have to say that I dont think she had food poisoning. I do this all the time (not willingly of course) went to the doctor and had a few tests run at the hospital and turns out that theres nothing there, he just said that I have a very sensitive stomach, I do have to go back again to make sure its nothing else cuz the last time i cehck it was like 2 years ago...but in any case back to my point, this is very frequent for me...i eat food, somehting like anywhere from1 hour to 5 hours later, usually at night right before bed or when im getting tired, start feeling really bad, (just like ur dd, minus the stomach touching thing) and then booom, out it comes, everything from the whole day...next thing i can go to disney cuz i feel so good again....i think you should just monitor if this happens frequently and then take to dr and ask.

I believe true food poisoning of the dangerous kind, takes many hours to strike - it's not just an upset tummy it's your body being poisoned and it can effect your nervous system and vital organs. It is extremely severe. 12 - 48 hours for onset.

The illness that strikes within hours of eating is something less serious, almost like your body getting rid of something before it poisons you.

I was majorly sick at Disney after having the Chicken Puke Pie at Prime Time Cafe, it pretty well ruined the next 3 days - where I couldn't eat anything for nausia and pain, try sitting through the spirit of aloha show with waves of nausia wishing you were dead, every meal was ruined for me after that incident. :guilty: :sad2:

When I had food poisoning years back when I ate at Rally's, I was sicker then a dog for a couple days. I mean I had severe morning sickness with my daughter I was in the hospital for 4 1/2 months on a IV and it almost compared that is how sick I was..
