Normally my experiences with the Disney Company have been warm and friendly. I have fond memories of visiting my grandma in Southern California as a child, and she taking me to Disneyland for the day. Now with my own family, we wanted to share the experience and lifetime memories. We booked a family trip for 6 days last November to the Disney World Resort in Florida.

The first part of the trip was nice. We enjoyed Downtown Disney and the Magic Kingdom. But visiting Epcot on the third day was a mistake. It was an absolute tragedy!

First we walked around the park, visited the Kodak center and rode the Test Track ride. But then we decided to have dinner at the Norwegian Restaurant Akershus. Big mistake. We all had dinner from the Smorgasbord but within the hour three of us were violently ill. Not everyone in the group got sick, but we narrowed the bad food down to, everyone that ate the pickled herring or the rutabaga soup got ill. We started the trek back through the park out to the parking lot so we could get back to the hotel ASAP.

It took us almost an hour to get through the park with the crowds and the frequent bathroom stops. What disheartened me was how uncaring and uneducated the staff was. Several times we’d walk a little ways, and then someone would need the restroom. Panicked we’d ask the first Disney employee we could find where the nearest restroom was. Of the four employees we stopped, two of them were able to direct us to the nearest restroom.

To make matters worse, the last restroom we were able to stop at was near the gift shop at the front of the lake (the side nearest spaceship earth.) Every restroom we went to after, save for the one next to the gate at the front of the park was closed. It was near closing time, I understand, but people were still watching the fireworks show, and we had members of our family that were ill from the food with Diarrhea, stomach cramps and vomiting. I actually had to vomit a little in the bush near a rest room (by the ice cave/ gift shop,) because one of your employees stood in the door way and refused me to enter as it was being cleaned. We even had a disabled adult with us, and the employees were still unhelpful. They kept directing us to guest services up near the gate.

By the time we reached the gate, members of my family had vomited in a bush or messed their pants. It was absolutely humiliating.

We spent the last two days of our vacation laid up in the hotel recuperating. It was an expensive trip to have to waste half of it sick in a hotel room. One that we made many sacrifices financially to make. I am surprised that this is how Disney has evolved. Yes its, been many years since I visited a Disney Park, and I was only a child. But I never dreamed treatment of park guests would be so gruff and rude.

My sister-in-law has suggested taking all the kids down there for a family reunion in the next year. I am strongly opposed to this just for the sake of the guest treatment. The employees were not knowledgeable of where we could even find the restrooms in their own park! They offered no assistance and only aided in us feeling more miserable and humiliated as we walked through the park literally soiled. We are considering Universal Studios Instead.

Lastly, it is horribly difficult to find any customer services information, let alone an email address or a phone number. Even the front desk at the hotel could not give me clear information on who to send this complaint to. I am not confident this letter is even sent to the correct address, but it is my hope that it will be routed to the proper people, and maybe some other family won’t have to go through what we have. Perhaps, Disney World doesn’t want to receive complaints, but it is a poor way to run a business by not listening to the concerns of your customers.

I am disgusted in Disney World Epcot’s lack of knowledgeable staff, and lack of caring. Even if the bathrooms were being cleaned, we obviously were in an emergency situation. Even after vomiting in a bush outside the restroom, the staff was uncaring. I am so sad that this is the memory of Disney that we’ve created in our family. It is definitely not the one I grew up with, nor expected. My co-workers have come back from vacations with marvelous stories and memories. I only wish I could have had the same experience with my own family.
:(

Now I'd like call a customer complaint line but: there isn't one! even the hotel staff would only transfer me to their own hotel manager. I had no quarrell with him. The hotel was great! It was the EPCOT staff that were rude, and the Norwegian Restaurant in Epcot we got sick at.

Found a guest services dining hotline. But they just transfer you to a voicemail dump. Nothing.

No wonder Disney has such a happy image, they have no way of collecting customer complaints!

have you gone to the disney website and sent an email? i have done that several times and have received a response from a real person. www.disney.go.com and then select the contact button. i understand how you felt as i have had food poisoning, but it was at home not at wdw. good luck in contacting wdw.

sorry to hear about your illness. nothing is worse than being sick on vacation. I know, let's see there was the stomach virus going to see the Grateful Dead, the flu in Indy, etc.

However, I think the incubation period for food poisoning is 24 hours. you may have unfairly smeared Norway!

Nope. DH is a doc and best friend is a toxicologist, and they love to tell me how I "just have a virus" whenever I complain about food poisoning. My best friend says the rule of thumb is "early onset, early dissipation usually = food poisoning." In other words, if it hits you shortly after you eat (2 - 6 hours is normal) ans goes away about as quickly as it hit, it's usually food poisoning. If, on the other hand, you get sick *several* hours after the last time you ate and/or it lasts a long time (12 hours or more), it's most likely a stomach virus. I agree, though, if they were still sick two days later it was most likely a virus and not Norway's food.

I am sorry to hear the origional poster had such a bad experience! I've heard so many wonderful things about WDW staff going out of their way when people were ill that this shocks me. Luckily, we haven't had to put it to the test yet.

Peanutzmom: what you said is not exactly true- some toxins can take 12-36 hours to kick in- here is some info

Some bacteria ( i.e.Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus Type 1) give off a toxin when they multiply. These toxins are heat stable and not destroyed when by cooking (such as reheating leftover food that was left out too long). These toxins result in nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea occurring usually within 6 hours (less than 12 hours) of eating the contaminated food. Vomiting and diarrhea are the body's way of eliminating the toxin. Although the experience is unpleasant, most common cases of food poisoning run their course within 24 to 48 hours without needing medical attention. Antidiarrheal medications are usually not advised since they may prolong the illness by slowing the GI transit and elimination from the body.

Other bacteria (i.e. Salmonella, Campylobacter) do not cause "poisoning" with a toxin. These bacteria reproduce in the body causing an infection. These bacteria may take 12 hours to several days depending on the bacteria to cause symptoms (incubation period). Symptoms include a fever, watery diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and generally feeling ill lasting a few days to weeks. Seeking medical attention can be of benefit with these infections and they may be cultured in stool samples.

Kirkharod---First you said you thought the incubation period was 24 hours, which is what Peanutzmom responded to. But in your next post you described food poisoning that could kick in within 6 hours. Sounds like the OP's family could have suffered from the Staphylococcus aureus or Bacillus cereus Type 1 bacterias you described.

It seems highly unlikely that three members of a family would come down with such a virulent form of the flu at exactly the same time! It's certainly never happened to anyone in my family or anyone I've ever known.

Regardless of the cause of sickness, I find the actions of Disney staff very disappointing. You'd hope to find a little compassion when you're ill. I'd be pretty upset, too.

I fee bad you got sick on your trip, I think as some point we all have. It was right of Epcot but for you to be so vivid about puking in bushing is gross and I am going to have that memory in my head when I get down there. :D Whether you had food poisioning or a stomch bug , which is easy to catch touching everything at Disney, kids picking their nose, sucking their thumb, you can pick up anything. :D

Jswanson - About two years the same thing happened to my mother at the Concourse Steakhouse at the Contemporary Resort. She ate a seafood bisque of some sort. On the boat launch back to Ft Wilderness about an hour after dinner she became violently ill - so ill that my father had to call the house medic. The medic took notes and apparently reported the news to the Contemporary.

I'm not sure if heads rolled as a result, but the embarrassing nature of the poison would behoove Disney staff to ease your suffering as gracefully (and quickly) as possible. Their behaviour was unacceptable.

Doesn't sound like food poisoning from Norway to me either. Was there another meal you had earlier or the night before that could have been the culprit if in fact it was food poisoning?

Sotoalf - you stated the person ate seafood bisque - could it have been an allergic reaction to the shellfish? I know I almost killed my sister in law one time - while my brother was away I had her over for dinner and she is from Germany and never ate shell fish. We ate scallops. Within 1 hour she wasn't feeling well so she went home -- ended up in the Emergency Room at the hospital that night due to an allergic reaction to the shell fish.

For those of you wannabe doctors who keep claiming it couldn't be food poisoning, food poisoning can be as quick as within an hour. My wife and I had food poisoning from stuffed chicken breasts (not from WDW). We had only been through eating for about 30 minutes. We actually took the leftovers of the food to the Emergency room with us and it was found that the boudain in the stuffing was tainted. Oh and by the way, we were sick for THREE days. So, to the OP by all means Email Disney with your complaint. Personally, if I were sick, closed sign or not on a restroom, I would be using it and then let them try to tell me no.

Chipster: I assumed it was an allergic reaction at first too, even though my mother's system has never reacted adversely to shellfish. The Ft Wilderness front desk later told my parents at the end of their vacation (which, thankfully, wasn't ruined) that several guests experienced a similar bout of violent nausea after consuming the Concourse Steakhouses's seafood bisque.

I think we're losing sight of the real point here. Any restaurant can serve spoiled food one night. What matters is how it and its supervisors react to the situation. In the case of my mother's poisoning, everyone behaved superbly. In the case of the poster's experiences at Akerhus (a terrific restaurant, by the way, but one whose food is more liable to become contaminated because the buffet is open-air) and Epcot, the staff behaved insensitively.

Vomiting into a bush is a mortifying experience, and sensitive park employees should have helped her out.

I had tomaine poisoning as a child (I will never forget) from bad mayonaisse in a chicken salad sandwich. It hit within 5 hours of eating.

Fish that has sat on a buffet can go bad. Also, if any of the salads had mayo in them, they also could have gone bad. Would surprise me if you were the only family that got sick that night. You should definitely complain.

If I became "that" sick while I was on vacation- I would have asked the hotel to see a medic or something. Perhaps they could have helped you in some way- and maybe Disney would have intervened and would have taken this issue a little more seriously.
Did the hotel offer to contact a doctor or medic for you???
Did you ask to see one?

There are a few bacteria that can show up within an hour of infection, Staphlylococcus aureus is the most common example of one that can show up within 1 to 6 hours of infection so it is very possible that it was food poisoning. I'm sorry that it ruined your trip :( but for future reference, make sure to report it so they can trace where it came from and stop it from happening to another family. They may have compensated you for it as well. I would have walked up to the front desk of your resort immediately upon return from Epcot and explained what happened. It may have saved your vacation and left you with a happier memory of a bad situation. I have had problems with Disney, but I've never been in a situation where Disney hasn't done all in their power to rectify the problem. From what I've read here, it seems Disney does more to help people with an immediate problem...rather than complaints long after the event is over.

You might be interested in this thread HERE where another DIS'r stated her family had problems after eating at Akerhus. It does sound similar to your situation.

Stop trying to deal with WDW when you are gettin such little customer service.

Call the health department of Orange county and report the problem. It is one of their duties to investigate potential cases of food poisoning.

Remember the bad tomatoes that WDW fed to the group of disabled folks who visited about a year ago. It happens.

This is the email address that I used on Monday to email some issues to Disney World. We were there for 7 days and for the most part had a wonderful stay.

We had a few small issues (nothing major like yours) and I just wanted to bring them to Disney's attention. We will be returning in January for another 10 days over the marathon.

We hadn't orginally planned to stay on Disney property again, just because we needed to save a little money, nothing to do with our issues. However we have, today made reservations at CBR again.

Here's why...

without going into details...
I emailed our concerns to the above email on Monday, on Tuesday we received a reply of acknowledgement stating that our concerns will be looked into and we should expect a response within 10 business days. Today we received a response.

We were not looking for any discounts or freebies, we just wanted some small incidents brought to attention and we were never offered any freebies/discounts/etc.

But I was impressed with the quickness of their response, and that they apologised for any inconvenience caused.

So we will be staying on property and visiting all 4 parks again - just because I know if there are any problems they will be addressed, maybe not solved, but at least addressed.

Rachael

Let's not forget ecoli....

and the Epcot staff should be ashamed of themselves (are they hiring the uncaring or just morons??)

If anyone is ever in that situation again, don't leave the park - demand from a CM to have medical assistance (as in the first aid station at the park). They can at least provide a bathroom and transportation back to the hotel plus document the incident.

Sounds like you need this t-shirt:

Here is what looks to be a good place to start regarding contacts:

Sorry to hear about your episode. My whole family was sick w/some icky intestinal virus the last time we went to Disney. We think we caught it on the airplane...anyway the entire 10 day trip we were all as sick as dogs. Ordering chicken soup from the Beach Club room service at $12 a pop was bad enough, but when I think of all the money we wasted...I still want to cry. We spent only a few hours in any of the parks for the whole trip!

BUT - I'm getting back up on that horse and trying again. Granted, I did not have problems with the Disney employees. I would complain mightily if I were you! Frankly I'd figure out how to get in touch with Michael Eisner himself! Who knows, you may end up with a few freebie tix as an apology. Don't give up on Disney though. There is still much magic to be had, and you need to have a good experience as a tonic!

Good Luck!princess:

YUCK! What an awful trip :(

I can't believe you all made it out of the park. Sounds like you guys could have used a ride out. I can't imagine what you went through.

I think that I would have made it a point to throw up on the floor of the bathroom that was being cleaned when they said I couldn't go in. Maybe then you would have gotten the attention you deserved.

Definitely find the right person and voice your opinion on how you were treated. Please don't let this go.
