Food poison??

Yuk!
I was so sick after a meal at Cantina de San Angel back in August. I started feeling nauseous about 2-3 hrs. after I ate and I was up all night (throwing up and such) trying not to wake up the 3 kids in my tiny WL room! I was so tired the next day and of course, my DH slept though the whole thing and thinks I'm crazy cause he didn't get sick :confused3 . He should consider himself lucky!!

Actually we ate breakfast at 8:30 AM on Mon. and I started vomiting about
1:30 AM on Tues. The others started after me. Since I did not have other symptoms of illness ( or the others), we assumed it was something we ate.
Thanks for your concern. I was happy it was only a day not going to the Park!

Is that the only place you all ate at? Where did you do dinner at?

My ds and dh both got really sick a few days into our trip. My dd and I didn't get sick till a week later at home. I really thought it was something they ate, but after getting sick too, it must be something going around. (It only lasted a day what ever it was)

I hope everyone is feeling better :)

Nothing is worse than having a stomach bug, especially away from home
That happened to us in 2004, about 2 days into our trip.
DH and I and DS4 ate at the Rain Forest Cafe and then in the middle of the night, I was violently ill, couldn't stay out of the bathroom

Then DH woke up, you guessed it, he had the same thing, DS was a little sick but not like us, we slept all day, lost a whole day at the parks, it was awful.
But the next day we were ok, looks like we just caught a virus somewhere

And I know it had nothing to do with the Rainforest Cafe, but we can't even go in there now. We just walk past it and laugh :lmao:

Check out where you ate the night before 1900 Park Fare. That could be the home of your virus.

Viral GI stuff is bad enough, but if it was truly bacterial, you'd know it. Things like salmonella, staph, E coli 0157:H7 and Clostridium (fancy names, but I was a microbiologist for many years, so I've seen this stuff in all of its disgusting glory) can cause violent symptoms after only a couple of hours. Your body recognizes bacteria quickly and produces a vigorous (and runny) reaction to get rid of it all. Viral stuff can take days before your body finally gets the hint to flush it out.

After a day or so once the virus is gone, you'll be wanting a Mickey bar...

Food poisoning can actually take a couple of days to show symptoms!! I contracted it from a meal at Raglan Road in DTD and it took approx 15-20 hrs before I showed the symptoms! Ruined our day at Animal Kingdom!!

That is why I put "probably" and "usually" in my remark. I know that there are always exceptions to the rules.

I am not saying that there is no way that the OP had food poisoning, but it is a greater chance that its a virus

We didn't all eat dinner the night before at the same place. I can assure you that I was violently vomiting for several hours. Again... I still had a wonderful
time at Disney and I was glad I only missed a day of fun.

Just got back late Monday night (10/13), I became ill 5:30am on Wed. Probably a virus. I just hope the rest of my family doesn't get it. It stinks:sad2:

Last year in September, on the last night of our vacation, I ate at Pop Century - some kind of chicken with pasta and a side salad. My dd ate the grape tomaotes from the salad with no ill effects. But three hours later, I was projectile vomiting, and did so for hours until my body expelled the problem food. I honestly belive the culprit was the salad greens or the packet of salad dressing. Fortunately, I made my flight the next morning. I never bothered to contact Disney.

I've had food poisoning before (from a canned Pepsi) and there is no other feeling in the world like it. You have my deepest sympathy on you and your sons being sick. I am still grateful my little one didn't eat the problem food.

I tell you one thing I always do when going to buffet restaurants at WDW or anywhere else for that matter. I will always go wash my hands after going through the line and before eating my food. If I go back through the line then I will go wash them again. This is one of the biggest potentials for the spread of bacteria, viruses, and other food borne illnesses. It is the number one spreader of the Noro Virus on the ships too hence why they now serve you during high risk periods. Handing you a wipe does little good to combat germs on untensils on the buffet lines. People lick their fingers, etc, then go back through the line handling all the utensils. Last year at Boma I saw a woman sample food and lick her fingers between each pod while serving herself on the line. That's just sick! I saw the same thing on the Wonder at Topsiders a week later.

The OP most certainly could have, and most likely, had food poisoning. The time span was dead on. Pathogens such as Salmonella, Ecoli 0157, Listeria, and others must grow. This takes time. However, don't always blame it on the chicken, etc. The chicken, etc, gets cooked and is most likely fine. It was probably the knive that cut the chicken that didn't get washed that then cut the lettuce that didn't go through a "kill cycle" before getting served. This is called "cross contamination" and is the biggest culprit in the food service industry.

Also, if you get systemically ill within a couple hours of eating somewhere you had better look at where you ate the meal before that. Many get blamed that are not guilty. I never forget when we got blamed for food poisoning by a lady once. It was 2-hours after she ate. Upon further investigation she had eaten at Burger King the night before. When she called them 6-people had reported being sick. They traced it down to contaminated lettuce due to poor prepping procedures described above. It was Salmonella, hit her about 18 hours later. Often it won't hit until after the next meal so you blame them.

Staph and chemical poisoning are about the only things that can hit you in a very short period. With Staph, which is very common, you don't throw up usually. The other happens with cramping and it's over very quickly, can hit in about 45-minutes. It's often confused as indigestion. In fact about 70% of indigestion is food borne illness, just not enough to make you systemically ill. It all depends on how much of the toxin you ingest and how well YOUR body is able to fight it. This is why some people get ill that ate the same thing and others don't.

For the most part, I feel Disney does a great job especially with a fully implemented HACCP plan in place. This is a very rigid plan with lots of checks and balances and procedures in place. It's VERY expensive to implement.

Moral of the story? Wash your hands alot. This will go along ways to stop you from getting sick. And remember, some of those bacterial wipes actually promote pathogen growth. Washing is much better...

Food borne illness lesson over for now:)

Ted.

Sorry to hear that... hope everyone is feeling better!

Thank You :flower3:

I'm just curious OP, did you by any chance rent sea racers in Bay Lake? We did on our last day and the wind was against us and the waters were choppy. My son and I were constantly sprayed with water and I got really wet. I got a bad stomach virus 1 1/2 days later and still have stomach issues and my son has been taking Immodium. I know the lake has bacteria in it so no swimming is allowed and we are now wondering if that has something to do with our stomach issues :confused3 My husband and daughter did not get nearly as wet as my son and I (alot less weight in the boat) and they are fine.

The bacteria that can potentially be in the lake is one that is found in shallow waters, usually above 80 degrees, and I'm pretty sure it involves swallowing the water. Disney wouldn't allow people on those sea racers if there were a significant risk where getting splashed would make you sick.

happens often,I believe, yet so impossible to 'prove';)
We've been to Disney numerous times over the years, and have experienced food poisoning at least 4-5 times....not all that bad a track record, considering the number of meals we've eaten there:thumbsup2
last time was after a breakfast at Ohana, dh was the only member of our large party who ordered a special juice....and within about an hour or so got so violently ill that he had to go back to the room for the day......like I said, hard to prove, but,he felt better within about 12 hours......this stuff happens all the time- buffets, busy restaurants-
could all have been coincidence? sure, but not as likely as the other explanation.....

This just confirms my tried and true method of avoiding food borne illness- eat only fried foods! It's why we Southerners stay so BIG and strong...

PS. The vomit/"both ends" bug has been going around especially bad this year. We got it from our European relatives after they flew over here for a visit. Imagine seven people and two bathrooms. Yuck. Wash your hands, don't touch your face, wash your hands some more. Sorry it had to happen while you were on vacation.

Thank You :flower3:

No, we did not rent the sea racers...but I can see your reasoning about the
bacteria.

I just returned from WDW on 10/8/08 and had a wonderful time except...
On Mon., 10/6, my sister, brother-in-law, two nieces, and myself ate at the
character breakfast at 1900 Park Faire in the GF. Later we went to EPCOT and
experienced the Wine and Food Festival. Tuesday one by one we all were vomiting or you know what (or both)! This lasted about a day. Did anyone else become sick who ate there on those days?

I was at EPCOT on Sunday November 2, 2008. On Monday I felt a little bad but just a sore throat. That night at 6:00 I started throwing up and the other all night. At 4:00 am I threw up blood so my mother took me to the hospital where the doctors told me that I had almost died of kidney failure. They never pin pointed what it was but I had eaten several things at EPCOT the day before. I have also been very sick after eating at the Si- Fi dinner about two or three years ago. I live in Florida and I love Disney World and it could have been something else that I ate but its weird that you were sick to. Hope all is well with your family!

There have been several other threads recently about people getting sick. I think there is a nasty little bug going around down there right now.
