I just returned from WDW on 10/8/08 and had a wonderful time except...
On Mon., 10/6, my sister, brother-in-law, two nieces, and myself ate at the
character breakfast at 1900 Park Faire in the GF. Later we went to EPCOT and
experienced the Wine and Food Festival. Tuesday one by one we all were vomiting or you know what (or both)! This lasted about a day. Did anyone else become sick who ate there on those days?

probably not food poisoning. Food poisoning usually takes a couple of hours to start feeling it.

They probably caught a virus from somewhere. I'm not saying that they didn't catch it from the restaurant, but its not poisoning.

I feel so bad for you. Last September, DH and I had lunch at Electric Umbrella and within a few hours DH was sooo sick. I think it was day two of our vacation and he didn't feel quite right for the rest of the trip. I felt so bad for him, he felt horrible. Sorry to hear about your experience.

Actually we ate breakfast at 8:30 AM on Mon. and I started vomiting about
1:30 AM on Tues. The others started after me. Since I did not have other symptoms of illness ( or the others), we assumed it was something we ate.
Thanks for your concern. I was happy it was only a day not going to the Park!

If you ate at 8:30 Monday morning, food poisioning symptoms would have started showing up before noon.....not 16 hours later. Now...if you're talking about something you ate after say 8 or 9 pm, and throwing up at 1am, that might be food poisioning.

Viruses can make you throw up and the other for just a few hours without any other symptoms and be gone just as quickly. And viruses can incubate for as few as a couple of hours and as much as a day or more....so you could have all caught the virus on the plane (notorious for passing on illness because of the recirculated air), or by all touching the handrail somewhere in the park, or a million other places. It's virtually impossible to tell where or who you catch viruses from. It's also possible that one of you caught it when you weren't with the others or touched something they didn't....and then simply by holding hands or touching each other, or touching something then they touch it....see how easy it is too pass a virus around.

If you still think it was food poisioning, call Disney and report it. They are required to keep records of such reports in case there truly is an outbreak. They'll be able to see whether others that ate at 1900 or the Festival also complained of throwing up. If no one else did, then it obviously wasn't food poision...or there would have been dozens or even hundreds of reports of illness. Food poision in a public place reaches critical mass very quickly because of the sheer number of people involved. Food poisioning at home usually goes undetected because everyone assumes that it must be a virus never thinking that they could have poisioned themselves by leaving the chicken on the counter to thaw, or making the salad on that same counter, or even from not using a clean sponge on the counter, etc.

I'm so sorry that your vacation was marred by such an unpleasant illness, but very happy for you that it ended quickly.

These were posted over on the Community Board, wonder if it's the same thing you had? :confused3

Have you had the awful stomach virus going around? My 7 yo son had it this past wednesday. I started with it on Friday morning. I felt like I was going to die. Throwing up, Diarrhea, fever. Uggh. My moms office closed down early friday because the doctor had it. I'm in georgia, just wondering how far this thing reaches.

Loads of my 6th, 7th and 8th graders have had this, poor lil guys. It's AWFUL. :sad2: Most counties are asking pupils to stay at home for 48 hours AFTER the symptoms have gone in an attempt to avoid the spread.

Sounds like a virus of some sort. Could also be from eating too much food of the sort you wouldn't eat at home. If it were true food poisoning, you would have probably ended up at a hospital ER, or at least a physcians care center.

i agree with pps I think it was a virus. BUT depending how long it took for digestion and the organism or toxin involved it could take up to 24 hours for symptoms BUT you would have been so dehydrated you would have ended up in an ER like the pp stated. So I think no worries about food poisoning.

It is such a bummer to be sick at Disney -- I hope you are all doing well now!

Disney of course is highly motivated to avoid making people sick, and reporting your potential food poisoning might be helpful to their efforts -- although, as with anyone's trip, there are so many foods and drinks involved it is almost impossible to isolate. Food poisoning can be bacterial or viral -- and can take 6hours to 48hours for the most common varieties to surface with symptoms. Some forms can take several days to surface. So you can see how many sources there can be. And, the symptoms you describe could certainly be from the plane or other contact.

We had one similar experience at Disney -- but it was the night in 2004 when Hurricane Charlie blew through, so they were understandably distracted. It doesn't stop us from going back -- or even eating at the place that made us sick. That's how you know you are Disney obsessed.

I am so sorry that you had to experience this! I am glad that it didn't ruin your entire trip!

Last year when we were at Disney, my two sons and I got food poisoning twelve hours after eating and were diagnosed at the hospital. My kids were young enough that they were dehydrated quickly and required an overnight stay. Even with the discharge paperwork stating it was in fact food poisoning and the fact that we had only eaten at Disney for the last 72 hours, they refused to file a proper report without a packet of info. on each of us and full rights to any and all medical records on us (not just at the hospital, but ever) until 2012. I was not trying to get money or anything and repeatedly told Disney that I only wanted to make sure the report was filed so other people wouldn't get sick and lose three days of their vacation like us ( we were only at Disney 5). There were a number of other people I talked to at POP, including an entire dance team that were ill as well.

Unfortunately, nothing ever came of this. I know it's because they have to protect themselves from the wack jobs of the world who only want to sue... it's just unfortunate. Amazingly, I still love the mouse and the staff at POP were very nice and accomodating (esp. Mousekeeping... my kids were 2 and an infant so we needed replacement sheets... a lot).

That could have been a state or CDC requirement.

Perhaps... but the medical records included the removal of our right to privacy and signing them over to Disney.

I perfer to think they were forced to do it this way and not just because of the scammers out there.

Anyway, we're going back in Nov. to re-do the trip in a proper way. I have over planned in every possible way to try to insure everything is perfect for the boys. Here's hoping!:goodvibes

Actually, the onset of food poisoning symptoms can be anywhere from about an hour to a few days and sometimes more, depending on the type of food poisoning and how much you ate/drank of the poisoned items, and even your own health. Take salmonella for instance. I had a case of salmonella poisoning from milk, along with many others, and my symptoms didn't appear for several days. Odd thing was, I had one glass of milk and had pretty bad case, but my pregnant friend drank lots of milk out of that gallon, and she was hardly sick at all. It was actually part of a pretty big episode of food poisoning affecting hundreds of people. But, being that I wasn't sick for a few days, I wouldn't have guessed that was the source, until it was on the news and we knew we had milk with the dates, from that store. Anyway, my point is that it could definitely be food poisoning, there are plenty of times it doesn't show up right away. It's a common misconception that it's only food poisoing if it shows up in a couple hours.

Hi all,
According to our food authority (australia) food poisoning symptons usually occur within 4 to 6 hours but may be up to 3 days. If you get sick within 3 hours of eating it is unlikely to be the last meal you ate.
It is such a horrible time when you are all sick on a vacation. Hope everyone is feeling better now.

Food poisoning can actually take a couple of days to show symptoms!! I contracted it from a meal at Raglan Road in DTD and it took approx 15-20 hrs before I showed the symptoms! Ruined our day at Animal Kingdom!!

Remember tho that to be food poisoning, it should be diagnosed as such. Thinking you have it (and claiming you have it), you may well be wrong.
I had an incident 3 trips ago where , a few hours after a meal at CG, I had pain in my side along with big time nausea. Went to the ER at Celebration Hospital where the first thing I said to the admitting nurse was that I thought I had some bad food at CG. But was nothing of the sort. It was a Kidney Stone!

I got food poisoning after eating at Boma but when I asked Disney if anyone else had gotten sick the night before they didn't believe that I'd had food poisoning and told me that it probably was "something that was going around". It didn't upset me since I figure the last thing they want to admit to is poisoning you and I would eat at Boma again in a heartbeat. I might skip the pasta salad and coleslaw the next time though. The truth is that you can get food poisoning anyhere including Disney.

Ouch! Kidney Stones are not fun.

While I agree that many people jump to the food poisioning conclusion way to easily (and it's understandable given the media coverage on the poor state of our food supply!).....I seriously doubt that everyone in OP's family came down with a Kidney Stone at the same time! Now THAT would be media worthy.

Hope you're feeling better......been there done that, hope to never ever ever not in a million years have it again.

Well, if you were the only person at BOMA that got sick, then it wasn't likely to be food poisioning. Once food has spoiled to the point of making people sick, believe me, in a restaurant that serves as many people in a night as Disneys do, you'd have heard about it. It's possible that you and others who have suspected food poisioning when no one else got ill had a "virus" (and virus is simply a generic term for a micoscopic contagion) .....everyone thinks that if you get a virus you're horribly ill for days and days, but the fact is that you can actually be sick for only a few hours from a virus....or it can be life threatening and everything in between also. It depends on so many factors how bad a virus can affect you......the strength of the virus itself, your own immune system....your stress level and other health at that exact moment in time, all come into play when seeing how a virus will affect you. Have you ever had someone in your house get really sick, fever, aches pains, vomiting etc......and somehow no one else in the house gets it....or worse, everyone does. It's all those factors...the germ may have been strong when it hit that person and weakened by the time it got around.....or the ill person may have been tired or stressed and everyone else in the house a little less stressed, that can play a part...or maybe their immune system wasn't up to par for THIS germ...but yours was. See what I mean.

Think of it terms of computers since the computer industry purposely called things that can make your computer sick a "virus". Some computer viri (plural of virus) may actually destroy your computer......but most are just a little annoyance or inconvenience, sometimes damaging a little....sometimes you can actually have a virus in your computer and nothing will happen. People aren't much different from that.

And yes, there are cases where the food could be spoiled and not everyone gets ill.....some die from food poision, some simply wish they would :rotfl2: but because food spoils so quickly when it starts to go (there is no "half spoiled") that it's more likely that even healthy people will become ill, and unhealthy/stressed/tired people will be violently so.

If you really and truly feel that you have food poisioning from ANYWHERE, then you really should report it to the the local health department. If a restaurant, even a beloved Disney one, is serving food that is making people ill, then it is vitally important that it be corrected. If the restaurant won't acknowledge a problem, believe me, the health department and CDC won't brush you off nearly as quickly (and local health departments must report multiple complaints to the CDC who watches these like a hawk especially lately). They may not be able to send someone out to inspect that night, so THAT particular incident may never be proven, but the health department keeps track of complaints and those all go into account when they schedule surprise inspections, and when they do a little more thorough scheduled inspection. So reporting it may not solve your tummy problems, but it might save someone else from the same or worse discomfort.
