We are going to disney in August, so we are getting free dine, which is GREAT, but my worry is a lot of the ts entrees are not something many 13 yo kids will like, and because appitizers don't come with the meal, what have others done??

I have this problem with my DD of 15.

I would love to do California Grill but just can't find anything on the menu she would eat.

We tend to stick with buffets and family style meals although she loves Italian so we have ADRs at Tutto Italia and Mama Melrose as well

Gosh, I can't imagine this problem. My 13 year old DS loves the fact that he can order off of the regular menus.....Of course I do believe he is a human garbage disposal these days LOL. :rotfl2: In this case, you would probably do better going to the buffets like irenep said. Have you looked at the menus with your 13 year old? Maybe something would catch their eye that everyone would enjoy. Good luck to you!! Let us know what you decided.:flower3:

Never had a problem I have one picky 16 year old and one adventurous 12 year old. Both have had no problems with the adult menus, but when they have had any difficulty they have asked and always been given the children's menu. Signature dining has some great children's menus and they just double the portion so there is plenty of the simplier stuff.

I would sit down and look at some of the menus with your kids, and you might be surprised at what they will eat. Also remember that most places are happy to modify dishes to suit needs/wants. For example, subbing mashed potatoes or fries for veggies, or leaving sauces off of meats. I think that most TS places can make food your kids will eat- plain steak, chicken, seafood, etc, so I wouldn't worry.

You can also substitute an appetizer as an entree if your child would prefer something of the appetizer list. They could also order off the children's menu. Since you are getting free dining, it's not like you'd be wasting money on those 'underused' credits.

I'm not sure what you are looking at that isn't what 13 year olds would like. Is it the descriptions that are like "with a red wine reduction" or a "balsamic glaze" or "fresh seasonal vegetables?" What I call the fru-fru stuff.

Ignore that. Would he eat a chicken breast? A steak? Simple pasta? Order that stuff "naked".

Are the sides not what he likes? He doesn't have to have the exact side that is listed with that entree. Just ask what else is available. If there is a kids menu at that restaurant, there's going to be fries there and your son sure can order them as his side.

My husband likes steak plain so that's what he gets. Vegetables? Forget them. He'll ask for a substitute and usually rice or fries are offered. He absolutely hates mashed potatoes and will get another potato instead.

Just ask - Disney is great with things like that.

We had no problem with the 11 and 13 year olds last summer. They were both on the adult dining plan and never wanted for anything. We ate at YSH, WCC, 50's Prime Time and ESPN. ESPN was the only place all of us were disappointed in the menu. It used to be so much better. 11 year old DSS gained 5 pounds eating so well LOL.

Great to know! I'd been eliminating a lot of restaurants because I hate mashed potatoes. I'll take another look at them with the assumption that fries can be substituted, then.

disnut8 - thats us too!!

dd wants to do Cali grille, but all she will eat is the flatbread!! we arent on free dining, but we decided to pay out of pocket there - and just do appys probably spending app $20 a piece or less!! (which is better than using/wasting 2TS per person)

Last year she had several sugar episodes, and the chef at Cali Grille really made her day with that flatbread!! BUT, the server insisted we all had to order from the adult menu!!

Many places we could order and pay out of pocket for dd - a picky eater... sometimes with her sugar issues, she would have to eat before our adr time, so she wouldnt be hungry for a regular meal...

we've learned to be flexible, but most of the restaurants, chefs are there to help you have a magical time too!

I always read the sides for other dishes, and if something sounds better than what is paired with my choice, I always ask if its possible to swap - no problems! :wizard:
