Food in checked luggage

Has anyone put snacks, juice boxes, etc in their checked luggage?

On the SWA site, on their page of how to pack, it "reccommends" not to. Is there a reason for this?

Will my juice boxes explode?

I would not put juice boxes or anything like that in my luggage. The last time I flew, when I got my luggage, it looked like the airplane ran over it while taking off None of my things inside were damaged but my suitcase was destroyed. I am thinking that it wouldn't take much to cause those juice boxes to leak. What food I plan on bringing will come on the plane with us in our carry-on bags.

On some airlines, the luggage compartments are not pressurized. The change in pressure during takeoff and landing can do interesting things to objects packed in luggage that are not clothing.

I always put every toiletry item in a ziploc bag to prevent accidents, and never pack foodstuffs in checked bags.

Beyond the problems presented by pressurization, airlines also worry about the attraction of vermin to poorly-packed food in checked luggage. Practically everyone who puts food in their checked luggage feels that they've packed it adequately, but unless the food is in its original packaging, that's very often not the case. This can cause very serious health and safety concerns.

I have packed snacks in our check in luggage. I did juice boxes once and they were fine. Nothing was crushed, (now I have just jinxed myself ). If there was anything that could be crushed or homemeade I carry it on the plane with me. When we went in October I had bread in my carry on and in one of those cooler bags you get at the store for cold stuff I had lunch meat with a couple of ice packs. Everything worked out great for us.

Finally for my family packing snacks was a good thing for all. And for me it gave me an empty suitcase to pack all my Disney goodies that I bought!

Thanks for everyone's input. Several people on other threads have talked about shipping items to your resort by UPS, FedEx, etc. Would this be the same delima as packing them in the checked luggage? or would this be a safer alternative.

I know we will need some snacks for our two young kids and I sure don't want to pay what Disney will be asking. I like Peanut Butter, but I really don't think a sandwich is worth $6.00 even if you do get chips and cookies.

Shipping such items via public carrier, such as UPS and FedEx, would be both safer and more acceptable to the carrier, than shipping such items via airline, overall. However, check with the carrier -- some of them have specific advice or requirements regarding packaging specifications for food items.

I usually pack some food stuffs in my checked luggage. However, I never put liquids of any kind in. What I do take is cereal, peanut butter/jelly, breakfast snacks....but they are always brand new..haven't been opened. Then, when I'm getting ready to leave WDW, all the food gets tossed. I never bring anything home.

We just flew back, and I had water bottles in my bag, plus canned drinks left over from our trip. The airline rep at the hotel said soft drinks were fine, though my bag was wet at my final destination, from a soft drink that had opened. That was fine with me, since the bag I had it in had nothing that couldn't be washed, and the bag itself is a collapsable duffle that can be washed. The water bottles came out fine. I wonder if something like Capri Suns, not juice boxes would be ok.

As for snacks, I made PB&J sandwiches and took them to the park. They never said a word. Just bought things like drinks and fries or chips.

Thanks for asking this question. I was planning on bringing snacks on our next trip. We were going to bring cereal and microwave popcorn in the original boxes. I planned on purchasing all new items. There are 9 of us going and I have a baby that I HAVE to bring babyfood for. It's not that Disney is too expensive, it is that they don't carry all of the items I need for her. I will not have a car and am using DME so I will not go to a grocery store. For us, bringing our own items is a must.

my mom brought wine in her checked luggage and it leaked. It is a good thing were were in a home-away-from-home because she spent the first night washing all of their clothes. I wouldn't recommend packing liquids based on this!
