I am sitting in a Marriott Courtyard in Birmingham, AL where the rate was $160!!!!! If they can get this then no wonder Disney doesn't need to discount.....

You are right. Last week we just spent 2 nights at a Hampton Inn over by my daughter's college -- she was graduating from the University of Central Florida. This is about 30 miles east of WDW. We paid $149 a night and it was a few blocks away from the entrance to the college.

I know what you are saying. 3 years ago we stayed at a motel on the lake in Lake George, NY and paid $100 per night (not a nice room either). We were only able to get that cheap  rate because we drove to the front desk and walked in around 6:00pm and we were only staying one night. We asked to extend for 1 additional day and the manager hesitated but agreed. When we checked in to POR last year we couldn't believe we were paying the same price per night. I think what gets people caught up is that all of your money is going to the same place. Park tickets, food, souvinears, etc. We are looking for a break somewhere and I guess lodging is the most obvious choice.

Have you ever priced a decent room in downtown Chicago or NYC!?? WDW seems like a BARGAIN!!!! :wizard:

On the other end, I just checked out of the Fairmont San Jose for $150/night.

A very nice hotel at that rate, that's for sure. Cotton robes, turndown service, and a very well-stocked minibar. Granted, it was a conference rate, but I think general public rooms were only going for about $220 or so.

OTOH, as with anything else a surplus of something means competition in pricing. In Orlando there is so much hotel availability you can get a room at the Ritz Carlton for $199. Now I love the Disney properties but none, even the deluxes, come close to a real 5 star class hotel. That said, most people including myself are willing to pay a higher premium for location. So much for the surplus then I guess!
