Food at Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue

I am wondering how the food was? We are trying to decide between the hoop dee doo or the Spirit of Aloha Show.. Which show/dinner is more worth the dollars? Any thoughts would be welcomed .

Hey there, my family went to HDD last April and it was just an awesome experience! The food is bbq's ribs, BUCKETS of fried chicken, amazing potatoes, salad, warm corn bread, baked beans, and strawberry shortcake for desert. The food was hot and the atmosphere just can't be beat with the Pioneer Players. My boys still talk about it. I have never been to the Polynesian but when I read reviews on the two last year, that's how I decided on HDD. If you are on the DDP, it is two dinner credits, but really worth it for the experience in my opinion. Just my two cents!!

I have attended both shows. I recommend the Hoop Dee Doo over the luau. Both are very unique experiences, but I personally prefer Hoop because of the comedy show and homestyle cooking. The luau is great as well, but I like Hoop's food much better.

Honestly, we did not love the food at HDDR. The fried chicken was great and I really liked the dessert, but the ribs were really tough and the mashed potatoes were runny. We didn't care for the beans, but I think that is just because we are used to more of a baked beans type dish.

Having said all this, we had a great time. DS5 and DS2 are still talking about this and say that it was their favorite meal of the trip (which included 4 character meals).

Our server was amazing and really funny. My husband enjoyed him more than the show. I have read great reviews of the food and am sure that we just caught a bad night. Also, had we been really bothered by the food, we could have sent it back. They were very accommodating of DS5's food allergies and I have no doubt they would have tried to make things better for us. We were too busy enjoying the show, though!

We love the HDD! last year we decided to try something new and did the spirit of Aloha show. We kept saying we were not going to compare the two but it didn't take long before we all said that we wished we were at the HDD!
The food and the show are better at HDD. We actually got bored at the luau. We have been to Hawaii many times and we have seen many luau's, some quality and some not. This is so-so at best.

Been to the Hoop 3 times and the Luau 1 time, and we will do the Hoop again the Luau?
We liked the rib and bbq chicken but was similar to the Luau food.
O ya beer or wine is included no extra cost.

IMO, both are about the show and not necessarily the food. I like the food at Hoop De Doo (I like fried chicken) but it's not the greatest food and I wouldn't return for the food. I return because the show is hilarious and fantastic and a must see.

HDDR for sure. It is something that shouldn't be missed when visiting DW. The ribs, chicken, cornbread, everything was excellent. I just told my hubby last night that I could go for a salad like we had at the HDDR. I enjoyed every minute of it. I will make sure that I go next time we return.

We tried the kids luau years ago and it was OK. New Years we did the Hoop for probably our third time. Most of the food was good and the show is great. Definetly the Hoop-dee-doo over the Luau. We have done both but I haven't done the Luau since it was redone. The food was good - fried chicken was the best. The show is funny. Last time we went was in 2004 and we took my Aunt & my brother-in-law and they picked on my very very quiet brother-in-law and it was just so funny - he even enjoyed it after being teased something awful. My kids loved it also, they have been several times. They were at that point, DS 4, DD 7, DD 10. We are on a budget trip this time and wont be going back for awhile. Please enjoy - worth the money for the entertainment and food especially if you haven't done it prior. Highly recommend it!

I have been to the Spirit of Aloha before (2007), and would say the entertainment was great, but the food was eh, so-so. Considering the cost, I probably won't be going back anytime soon. I have never been to the HDDR, but am getting super psyched hearing all this great stuff about it because my first time is coming up in April!
I can't wait!!

We did HDDR last year and loved it. We are going back again this year. I thought the food for the most part was really good, except for the beans. I think they call them cowboy beans. They are not baked beans, but more like a BBQ bean and had a weird consistency. We had these at Whispering Canyon as well. We didn't like them at either place. My DH usually loves beans and even he didn't care for them.

The cornbread was AWESOME, and so was the strawberry shortcake, so save room for it. I also really loved the salad. Lets just say we were very bloated when we left. LOL!

We have been to both and really enjoyed the entertainment at both although HDD was better because DS was chosen to go up on stage and act out last scene with the group so a truly magical moment for our family..but I enjoyed the food better at the luau and the fire dancer is awesome. I think it just depends on what vibe you are going for somewhat, When we did the luau in 07 I wanted my dd to see the hula girls. This past trip in Aug we were staying at the WL and thought going to HDD was a nice addition. Either way, you will have a great time at both!

Another vote for Hoop-Dee-Doo...

The chicken and ribs are great, (and have been for the last 20 years that we've been going ) The quality can vary slightly, I think depending on your server, but it's never been less than good, and goodness knows you will get enough to eat and then some...

The show is very 'Hee Haw Live'. Not high brow, or anything, but it's impossible not to laugh and smile in spite of it all....

The Luau... Well, the fire dancers are very good, but in general the show is underwhelming, at least for us.

Same with the food. Again, this is just our opinion, but it always strikes us as something out of a cafeteria in Hawaii. Bland and often cold.

Ok so we have decided on HDDR Now my question is..How is the food served? Another words is it like a buffet line, or served family style at tables, or just like at a normal resturant with a waitress? And Dh says he read it was All you can eat? Is this true as well? And lastly their are three "levels" of seating? Is this sorta like at the Medevil knights show? Where you get to sit closer the more $$$$ you pay? Thanks for all of your help.

My family and I just went in January and we LOVE Hoop Dee Doo! I have gone several times now and love it! Food is great and the entertainment is great!

Hi again - I think it's great that you've decided to go to HDDR. I know you will love it!!

Here's how it works...

You are asked to arrive one hour before the show starts (I think we got there around 45 minutes early). You wait outside (the Wilderness Lodge grounds are lovely by the way) and they will take your family picture prior to going in. About 20 minutes before the show starts they open the doors and you are seated. They ask you at the door if you are Category 1, 2 or 3 seating (it's on your ticket) and direct you accordingly. And yes, Category 1 is the closest to the stage. Category 2 & 3 are further back and upstairs in the balcony. But really, there are no bad seats, it just depends on how close you want to be to the actual performers and stage.

We were staying on Disney property and took the bus from our resort to MK and then at the entrance you catch a ferry to the Wilderness Lodge. It's a lovely 15-minute boat ride. Then you walk to the WL where HDD is performed.

After you get seated they take your drink orders and the Pioneer Players come out and do an intro. The show is very slap-stick comedy with lots of musical numbers and some hilarious characters. We loved it. Basically, the PP come out between each of the courses. And yes the food is all you can eat and it is served by servers. We found our server to be very attentive and friendly. The only thing we got a refill on was the chicken because my son can eat scary amounts of food!! but they will refill anything you ask (this INCLUDES beer and wine!) mmmm...refreshments!

The show is done in about an hour and a half...and then they bring in the next group about 10 minutes later after you leave. Oh, and during the meal, your server will show up with your pic that was taken outside and you can buy it...which we did...it's a nice souvenir.
