Food and Wine Half Marathon ANNOUNCED!!!!

Since I can't go to the normal 1/2 marathong (tax season) this is great for me. I think I am going to do it!

It sounds very interesting. Not sure how I feel about it being at night, and during much warmer weather.

The "Mickey's Halloween Family Fun Run 5K" sounds fun!!

We were already thinking about a trip next October to do MNSSHP again so now with this....hmmmm

Yeah, if the temp next year is anywhere close to where it was this year, then it'll make for a VERY brutal run.

It sounds pretty bad but in practice I don't think it will feel so bad at night. The humidity for the RnR half this year was over 90% but because the sun wasn't out yet it didn't feel like it. I run at night a lot in the summer (and winter for that matter) and even when it is brutally hot not having the sun beating on you makes a huge difference. Being in October we will also be conditioned to the heat from a summer of training.

It will probably be a bad race for a PR but if you run smart I think it will be ok.

Yeah, they might want to add a few more water stops.

What time will the race start? 7,8, 9pm? This means back of the packers(like myself) would finish the next day leaving not time to party or eat all the F&W food!

As mentioned weather this week has been ugly and would not be fun to do 13 miles in!

Good to know, thanks. (I'm a new runner so it's all new to me!)

I wonder if they do that for the warmer weather races? Didn't they run out of water at a race one time?

I'm very disappointed about the announcement..

This now means that all races next year are either half marathons, marathons of 5k's. I'm not up to doing a half marathon yet, but would like more of a challenge than a 5k. It just isn't worth it to make trips to wdw for 5k's. The minnie 15k changed to the princess half, and now they have removed both fall races and replaced them with a half?

I posted feedback on the disney blog and several others felt the same way -- I encourage you to post feedback (whatever your feelings are..!)

I think that's why they're doing the relay option - so they can have a shorter distance, without "officially" having a shorter distance. I love the 10k/13k races, but Disney has a lot of trouble filling them because people don't think it's worth paying the money for that short a race - this way they can have the best of both worlds.
And I read your blog post so I know what you're saying about wanting to earn the medal yourself - like I said, I enjoy the shorter races so I know where you're coming from - but I think Disney tried these for a few years and always has problems filling them. The Everest race was closer to a 10k once you added in running back through the parking lot for the obstacle course and then through the parks for the scavenger hunt, FWIW.

I think a lot of people felt they couldn't justify the expense of going to Disney for a 5K or 10K but could for a half or full. Running one leg of a relay is pretty much a 10K so they still have it, you just have to find someone else to run the other leg.

As far as not being able to do it you might be selling yourself short. I went from being able to run barely a mile to a half in 10 months. You have a year. I think if you put your mind to it might be able to do the half after all.

how will they handle the relay teams....i wonder if there will be a handoff point halfway through....i am very interested to see how they will deal with the logistics of this...

Marathon (or half marathon) relays are pretty common. There are multiple ways these can be handled.

One way is to have a two loop course where either one member runs the first loop and another the second or both runners run only the first loop.

Even if it isn't a loop they can have a half way finish. In this scenario there is a finish line half way through the course or a turn around a quarter in. The relay runners run together and then when they get to the break off point they either cross the relay finish line or run a shorter course back to the start. This is very common in races that have a full and half marathon. They run together until maybe mile 10 and then there is a split to get the half runners back to the finish.

Another is to have a hand off area. The way Akron did theirs in the past is each member of the team wears the same number with either a letter appended to the end or a different color. As a relay runner approaches the hand off area an announcer a little down the road calls the number out so the other runner can get ready. The first runner enters the transition area and the second leaves. There are marshals but also mats at the entrance and exit so they know if the second runner leaves early. Usually there is a bus that takes the second leg runners to the designated area if it isn't a course that has a natural pinching area to allow the starts to coexist without a second loop.

I'm guessing that since a Disney race is as much (if not more) about the course as the race so the last option is most likely.

Time will tell.

I was thinking about doing the Donald in 2011, but with this new 1/2 and lower than park crowds - I am going to do this one. Not to mention that being a DVC member the points and airfair will be cheaper too, for my family of 6.

this race sounds like so much fun - i was so excited when i got the email from disney sports. i am a little concerned about the heat factor though. i struggled running through the hot months this summer training for a fall half this season, but at least my race was cool here in the northeast. not really sure how i feel about running 13.1 miles in 87 degrees (esp since the temperatures will be cooler by then, so i won't even be as acclimated to running in the heat). but on the other hand, i don't really want to haul all the way down to florida and only do about 6.55 (or whatever half the distance of a half is), so we shall see

I thought we would not be doing this because of the timing in Oct. but Scott is saying that we may go for it. If it starts late, the heat will not be as bad as during the day. I do enjoy the TOT (even though it starts way after my bedtime!). We will see - we may be there.

Nudge......:rolleyes1

Food and wine, Half Marathon, MNSSHP, My birthday/Christmas present to me, night half, inaugural, My WISH friends...... I'm in!!!!

Chris? What about your DW? How did she like the 10K?

DH and I are looking forward to the Half AND the 5K. :woohoo:

Sounds like it will be a fun weekend!
