we are planning a trip in July with me, my wife, daughter, mom and dad, brother and 9 year old niece. We are on the dining plan.

Our sit-downs are whispering canyons, the princess breakfast in norway, the playhouse disney play-n-dine breakfast, crystal palace breakfast, biergarten, sci-fi, and chef mickey's.

Just this week, my niece, Carlee, was diagnosed with a wheat allergy and cannot eat anything with gluten in it.

I have been doing some research with this site and others and I am not the least bit worried that she will be catered to 100%.

I know we have to call all our sit-down places and I will be calling. Does anyone know what I can expect when I call or can anyone give me any tips on how to handle this? I am especially a little concerned with the counter service restaurants. Is there a way they will give me info as to which places offer gluten free options in the parks, etc.

Obviously, the child has had a bad week because she lost some of her favorite things and has been looking forward to this trip. I'd like to get this taken care of asap so she can continue to plan along with us worry free!

Any advice would help!

Thanks

You might want to check out the DISabilities board. There is a fair amount of discussion about food allergies over there.

My DD has a severe egg allergy and we are vegetarians. We have eaten at several of the buffets that you mentioned and I know that they have prepared my DD without any advance notice egg-free rolls and desserts that they have also mentioned are gluten-free. Most of the TS restaurants also have quinoa and other gluten free pastas available (again, I know this because of the egg allergy).

I would definitely call the restaurants ahead of time, but you will probably be fine if you make a last minute change and don't have the opportunity to let them know. Also, you might want to contact Brenda Bennett (you can find more info about her and her email address on the DISabilities board) before your trip. She was able to provide me with ingredient lists for snacks in the park and counter service restaurants. She also let me know where I could find special egg-free products for DD in the parks (for example, Main St. Bakery has egg-free, dairy-free, gluten-free cookies available).

My DH has an allergy to potatos (and to a lesser extent, some other foods in the same allergen family). While he can usually avoid potatos, the counter service places were always iffy because many fast food restaurants rotate their fryer oil so that chicken and fish, etc. are fried in oil that had french fries in them.

He found on our last trip (after about 6 years of yearly adventures to WDW, no less!) that each counter service register has a book that lists the ingredients for their menu. He was also able to ascertain that the chicken was not cooked in the same oil as the fries, and that the fries are actually vegan (a bonus as his brother's family is vegan)!

So don't hesitate to ask a cashier for the ingredients list, and if you have any questions, we've had great luck asking for clarification at the counter.

Amanda!
