Food allergies and dining plan

Hi all-was there over Thanksgiving 07 and we did not see Divvies anywhere, which was a disappointment since DS (peanut/treenut/fish) was so excited to hear they had the cookies and other snacks. We did not see any of their products in any of the gift shops or snack shops we visited. Not even the bakery in DD. BIG BUMMER-was I just looking in the wrong places? We were offered the special brownie with ice cream at Chef Mickeys.

We've always gotten top notch service and extra attention due to his allergies. Brenda does a fantastic job of alerting all the chefs. Even when he and DD stayed at the Simba's Cubhouse while we did a parent's dinner at Jiko, the chef at AKL called me a week in advance to confirm foods he could have.

Desserts were somewhat limited to things like soft serve ice cream and popsicles. Not always easy for an 8-year old, but what can you do? The staff will not take chances. If they feel it could be even a remote risk they will not serve it, or at least, they allow the parent to make the call but with clear warning that we assumed the risk.

We had a special dinner at California Grill and the chef there helped us order a cake in-house that he was able to have. Very nice. Also, he was able to eat at least one of the Thanksgiving desserts at Artist Point.

That's a good suggestion. I also may pack some of that soymilk that doesn't need refrigeration until you open it. That way, I've got something to fall back on.

I was going to suggest that you brought a tetra pack of soymilk with you in your luggage. Trader Joes sells individual soymilk boxes in both Chocolate and vanilla. My DD is lactose intolerant and we leave those at her pre-k for days that the other kids have milk with snacks and it works out well.

We found Divvies in Oct. 07 at the Main Street Bakery and at the ASMu food court. I think folks have reported finding them at similar places recently.

As for desserts with TS meals - this is always one of our biggest problems. DS is also a type 1 diabetic. I have found that I need to contact each TS place in advance (with the phone number they will give you when you made the reservation and note the allergy). I talk to the chef to make sure there is something there that he wants to eat because he is not a big fan of ice cream usually. With some pre-planning I've found them willing to have an item ready for him (like a brownie) from another restaurant - or something like an Itzkadoozie.

Can I ask- has anyone gone who needs to do a Rotation Diet?

We just got DS's IgG results back, and are waiting for the IgE's. So in addition to gfcf, we're looking at several other things now that will need to go into rotation. The IgG had some pretty shocking results.

I'm just not sure the best way to handle that part of it, to begin with it's totally new to us... I am thinking of this way: Look at the menus of the TS places we have ressies for and see if any of them lends itself to a particular thing better than another. For example, while I'm sure that Biergarten has wonderful chefs, it might not be the best place if it's "rice" (cereals) day, maybe a better option for "potato". Then make some preliminary decisions, and email Brenda with that information?

The reason it concerns me more is that in addition to me being in contact with them, they will probably have to be in contact with each other. I'm not going to get hysterical if some little thing trips up, but in general we'll need to keep almost every food he eats in rotation. (like I said pretty shocking results) Honestly, I want to send them the info, because I'm pretty sure they'll be better at it than I am and I can swipe ideas. :confused3

Plus we have counter service thrown in there. AAAAHHHHH!

...If I may ask what is an itsakadoozie pop? ...

I found this picture of an itzakadoozie pop over on the restaurant board.

That will be perfect. I was going to run to Trader Joe's sometime soon anyway to pick up some the snack items that my kids will want to bring.

Also, thanks to the person for posting the photo of the popsicle thing. I can't remember how to spell it. That looks great! Something fun and colorful for my DS, for once! :cool1:

Hi! WE just went in August '07 and 2 of my daughters have celiac disease (they cannot have gluten) I can't even explain how great all of the chefs were! It was incredible. At the buffets they went around and told me everything they could eat. At Crystal Palace, they offered to make something fresh because something looked contaminated. Even the counter services were great. They took a little longer but obviously well worth the wait! At every TS, a chef came out and not only found out what they COULD eat but what they really LIKED to eat! I dont know about the divvies but they did have some allergy-free cookies and brownies at the Main ST. Bakery at MK and also the gluten, peanut and dairy free rice krispy bars. They are in the shape of a star not Mickey head but still very exciting for my kids! I can just say it was so incredible not to have to worry during the vacation! If I can be of any help, please ask and I can give more gluten-free details about our trip!

They had the divvies as of December.

Brenda will send you a list that includes the location in each park that these are available. The brownie they have is wonderful and the divvies cookies are great (they also have another brand of cookie, divvies are way better) Carmel corn is excellent.

On the divvies carmel corn, if they tell you you can not get it as a snack tell them it is because of food allergies, they do not allow the regular carmel corn anymore but the allergy stuff is still included, sometimes the cashiers don't know that.

Go at the very least crowded times to eat (4:30pm) for the best chances at a specially made dessert. One option to mix things up a bit is a allergy free brownie/tofutti sunday. Also you can specify Rice Dream instead of toffuti, which has a milder taste. Many places can also sub in Sorbet or fruit desserts.

Avoid Wolf Gang Pucks if you have nut allergies. There was almost nothing safe and they did not seem as careful. Fruit was the only choice for dessert and they charged us $7.95 for it :scared1:

Coral Reef and Sci Fi have gone above and beyond for us more than once, also Cape May was fantastic, so is Boma. Crystal Palace was good, but the server was awful and it took 30 minutes to get his dessert out.

Where are the Divvies available?

I'm hoping we can try them during our trip. If they're good, I'm going to order some from the website.
