Fondant

This is such a timely posting! This weekend I tried my hand at decorating with fondant... The MM fondant was delicious - the results... not so good. (I apparently stink at cake decorating!) I didn't make enough fondant, and didn't have enough frosting, so the cake looks horrible. I gave up because we were running late to my sister's house.

However, I might try taking a Wilton class if it's offered when I can take it. I've got 'til March to get it right!

i made my first fondant covered cake a little over a week ago after discovering that none of our local bakeries could make me the super mario themed cake that my son insisted on for his birthday. A mario cake was his only request and i couldn't let him down!

I used the marshmallow fondant and i was so happy with how the cake turned out, esp. For my first time! We'll definitely use it again.

Thye lighting isn't great in the pic, because i took the photo at night after i finished the decorating. The figures on top are the only non-fondant decorations. I did the rest. The decorations go all around the cake, but here is an idea of how it turned out. Fondant is fun!

That is AMAZING! My husband would die if I made him a cake like that.

OMG, this is the best cake ever. My MIL is Mario crazy, we got her hooked many years ago and playing that sill game helps to keep her Busy, active, moving those arthritic hands, at 88 its a Good Thing!!...she would Love this cake...I cannot believe how cute it is! awesome job!!

tinkercat - how many bathches of fondant did you have to make? Also about how many people did that cake serve? It looks about the size I was looking to do. TIA

MMF is great to use and you can add Lorann flavorings to it to change the taste (cheap). Sometimes it is a bit unreliable due to humidity etc. Duff's fondant is just Fondarific with his face on it- they have tootie fruitie and buttercream flavor ($13 2lb- Fondarific) . Satin Ice is good but I have had some issues with it being too dry at times but it is a good staple for everyday use($10 2 lb). Fondx tastes like MMF but you don't have to make it yourself ($14 2lb). Chocopan tastes like chocolate because of it's base of chocolate - but is a bit harder to work with due that base - it thins with the heat of your hands and forget about it for summer cakes ($13 2 lb). Bakel's Fondant Pettinice is very nice, expensive but silky smooth, good for wedding cakes - a lot of people abroad use this brand ($21 5lb). I am remembering the prices for these from Global Sugar Art - cheapest Satin Ice pricing that you will find.

My personal favorite - one of the best ones to use for important occasion cakes (due to consistency) is Massa Americana or Massa Grischuna Neutral. Rolls out very smooth and you can go thin with this stuff. Expensive but beautiful to work with.

If you are looking for something to make at home that has a bit more elasticity than MMF google Michelle Fosters Fondant. It has gelatin and corn syrup in it - makes it more stretchy. Well, I used to put a wee bit of corn syrup in my MMF when I made it myself.

Ok, I rambled... sorry about that. Check out the GSA website, lots of neat stuff on there and since I have really, really bad arthritis I can't do the MMF knead anymore. I buy all of mine. Oh, and never, ever will it be Wilton - that's the only one I have had people pull off. The MMF and others don't taste bad at all and the thin rolling of it doesn't impart bad flavor.

Hope this helps * I like caking! :lovestruc

Wow MommyBell ~ I'm super impressed! Did you add any additional flavoring to the MMF? What did you use for color ~ food coloring??

Thanks so much.. I did add vanilla to the fondant, but wished I had some orange extract.. I think that would be really yummy! I used a gel good coloring I had at home, and it worked really well! Thanks for the comment:lovestruc

I don't have photos - but it makes a wonderful and easy "doll cake" for little girls as well (bake cake mix in bowl, invert, barbie in top thing). But don't let your eight year old help - the cake isn't nearly as nice......

Thanks so much. Its cake, I used a bread pan, and it "bubbled" up in the middle on its own, so I went with it, it wasn't what I originally wanted to do but I think it turned out better than the first idea I had.... I froze it first for a couple hours and carved it out to be that shape... added some cake here and there with frosting to "build" it up.:goodvibes
