Fondant or buttercream?

My planner has said that we would be able to have the cake design that we have fallen in love with but she's asked whether we'd like it in buttercream or fondant - theres a price variation between the two, which isnt an issue - but I'm just wondering which one you'd go for??
 
I think fondant cakes are very beautiful but I like the taste of a regular buttercream personally.

They do out buttercream icing on before the fondant so you could look at it that way.

I'd suggest posting an example of the cake for people to decide which would be better.
 
Fondant is great for making a smooth service on the cake and is necessary for some designs. Buttercream doesn't have such a smooth finish to it. The fondant has buttercream underneath it and they peel off the fondant when serving the cake (or at least I have heard they do). I really think it depends on the look of your cake. GL

It's in fondant here and looks lovely, so shall I just stick with that? If theres buttercream underneath then that will taste yummy anyway :)
 

I love fondant cakes, I love how smooth it us and actually like to eat it...lol
 
You could easily do that cake in buttercream and still get the smooth finished look you want, espically since the "waves" would be covering most of the cake and you really wouldn't see the finish anyway.

A lot of people dont' like the taste and texture of fondant, and as pp said, it seems Disney removes the fondant before serving, and for that design, it just seems a big waste of $$.
 
If you are having your wedding outside it was recommended to me that we go with a butter cream icing. If you are having it inside I do agree that Fondant looks very elegant and I have heard of some places taking off the fondant covering before serving the cake (not sure if they do that at Disney though).

There is quite a bit of buttercream underneath. This was a big concern for my dad (he hates fondant) and he wasn't disappointed when they cut our cake because there was still a lot of frosting left on it :)
 
I am pleased to hear that they put plenty of buttercream underneath! Our cake requires fondant. Oh, I think it is the other way around. Fondant holds up better outside in the heat than buttercream.

Same here, I love the taste of buttercream so am glad it will be underneath! I also thought it was the other way around aswell, that fondant was better in the heat than the cream :confused3

Thankyou for all your help everyone, we've decided to go for the fondant and upgrade the intimate cake for this one - I'm soooo giddy, can't wait to see it in 'real life' :cheer2:
