Flying With Water in Checked Luggage?

I know that I've seen a thread with people discussing flying with soda in checked luggage, but I was thinking of bringing some water with me. I'm wanting to bring a little Playmate cooler and put some water bottles in there. That way I will have the little cooler for my room in order to keep water cold and it would be an easy way to transport it.

If this doesn't work then I'll bring some bottles in a carryon (rolling) bag, but I'd prefer to not have to do that.

I don't want to use all my snack credits for water and do not like Orlando water.

I'll be taking the DME, so no way to get to the grocery store and with only 2 of us going (and getting the dining plan) I can't justify a grocery delivery.

Does anyone see a problem with this?

Thanks!

I just checked and I could fit eight 24 ounce bottles and five 16 ounce bottles, and that's not overly stuffing the cooler. Is there a reason that the airlines would not allow it as checked luggage?

Not a problem but they will need to be able to get into the cooler to check it. You would need a way to secure it. Also how much does it weigh?

Have you considered buying water at a Hess station? it's reasonably priced, and you can get some while at DTD, or at BW. I know that you'd still need to tote it back, but I just get leery of flying with water....

There was also a long thread on the budget board awhile back about ordering water from Staples with free shipping

And sadly I won't be there to get the water for you - sigh -

I would put a bungee around the Playmate and between that and the push-button lock on the cooler it should be ok. I could even put the bottles in one of those big ziplock bags for added security even though I don't think that they would explode or freeze.

I haven't weighed it, but I'm a weakling and it didn't seem heavy to me--I would guess 20-25 pounds at most (comparing it to the 40 pound container of dog food in our garage--glad the garage was closed and neighbors didn't see me going back and forth between the 2 comparing them... :teeth: ).

Haven't heard or thought about Staples delivery. How close to DTD is the Hess station? I hate to have to cart the water back to the resort, though.

This will be the first time that I haven't had a town car service or a rental car, so this will be a change.

Bavaria, which dates did you decide to go to WDW? We seem to always manage to avoid each other. :rotfl:

The Hess station is across the street from DTD on the Pleasure Island side.

I think I have a mental picture. The last 3-4 trips down there I've rented a car and it's a whole different ballgame thinking about this without a car rental. I'm happy to be trying the DME, though, and the price is right, even if I end up getting a cab a couple times.

As Safetymom pointed out, the Hess is very close to DTD. You could pick up a flat and take it back on the bus to the resort, if need be.

Or you could use netgrocer.com - I haven't ordered a huge supply of water from them, but back in May I placed a grocery order and had it delivered via FedEx to CSR (then I had to cancel the trip and found someone here to claim my groceries and enjoy them, but that's a differnt story.....) It came to around $20 and included water, breakfast items, etc. Their shipping charge wasn't bad, and you don't need to be there in person to claim your order like some of the local grocery delivery services.

(oh, I had a great 9 day trip just before Christmas, stayed at OKW with a friend and had a great time..... but just devasted that once again I miss meeting the famous Tigger&Belle! :rotfl: )

I'd go with the Staples option instead of lugging bottles of water on your flight. You just go to their website and sign up for the rewards program (free). We did this and ordered two cases of water (about $5.50 ea), some French Vanilla coffee creamer, and a tub of pretzels to snack on. We had the items shipped directly to our resort and included our arrival date in the shipping address. The rewards program gives you free shipping on your orders. If you are charged for shipping, just call customer service and they will issue a credit. Items were waiting for us at check-in (however, we did have to ask if it had been received).

We do have the staples reward card--I'll look into that. Do they have next day delivery? Will the resort hold the items for a couple days if it arrives early?

Since we're doing the DME I would only need to get the cooler/water bottles to the check-in at my end. They would then be delivered to my room, so that would make it fairly easy, especially since I'll drive up and drop off baggage on my end. Returning home the water would be gone and I can stuff dirty clothes in the cooler. :teeth:

But if I can avoid bringing it all together that would be good, too.

Personally, I kinda like the bring-a-cooler-of-water plan. No extra trips, and you have the cooler. By my calcs, that's a little over 2 gallons of water, weighing 17-18 pounds (plus the weight of the bottles and cooler).

We always pack bottles of water in gallon size ziplocks right in our checked luggage. 3 bottles per bag, 2 bags per suitcase. We need the extra room on the way home anyways, and I always seem to use those ziplock bags. This past trip we stored our left over desserts (dining plan) in the bags and had them for snacks later on. We also put our water in the bags and into our backpacks and didn't have to deal with the condensation wet mess that we usually have. I know that's a little off track...
