I just got my license renewed. I have one of those paper temporary ones until the new "real" one comes in the mail. Today I realized I only have 6 days left to get that new one!! I still have my expired one. Will I have any trouble with airport security if I show my old license along with the temporary one, in case in the new one doesn't come in time? I have photo ID from work, too. Should I bring that too, just in case?

I was remembering the thread about the person who's license got lost and had tons of problems at the airport. I was hoping someone out there had flown with a temporary and that it was acceptable ID. I have a feeling my new one won't come in time - I just found on the back of my temp. one a number I should call if the new one doesn't come within *60 DAYS* Yikes!

Can someone reassure me? Thanks!!!

Laurie :)

IT would be certainly a good idea to find out the status of your permanent license, if your local Department of Motor Vehicles representatives will help you. Maybe they will issue an extension on the temporary license that you now have in your possession.

The expired one is just that: expired.

Why not call as well the local airport that you are flying from to ask the question that you asked here? I think the people at the local airport security department would be the only ones to tell you whether they will accept your identification, don't you think?

I wouldn't wait to get either an extension on the temporary license, or try to get the permanent one. Do you have a passport? If so, bring that along.

Good luck.

Thanks! My temporary one doesn't expire until 11-17, but I was just concerned that it doesn't look "real" enough. I will call the airport now and ask them. I was thinking there wouldn't be anyone there on Saturdays - DUH!! (Can you tell I'm not a frequent flyer? LOL) I do know no one will be at the DMV today. I'll try them on Monday. Maybe I can get a rush on the new one.

If its any help at all, last Spring I renewed mine online. It was great, and recieved my new one (they used my old picture that is stored in their computers) within days. Its fantastic technology that you can do this. Can you check into that? You can do this every 8 years, but then you have to go and take the eye test.

I don't see why the expired one plus your temporary renewal wouldn't be enough. If a cop stopped you on the road it would work. Here in PA, I don't think we have temporary renewals, you have to go to a picture station and they give it to you immediately. Ours is every 4 years. Good idea to call the airport and check, your local airport should be familiar with your DMV.

In your earlier post at 3:14pm didn't you say, "Today I realized I only have 6 days left to get that new one!! "? But then you later said, "My temporary one doesn't expire until 11-17..."

I certainly misread something. If you have only 6 days left, then how does the temporary one not expire until 11-17?

One factor is when you are actually going to fly, of course. When will that be? On Monday, I would call the number that is on the back of your temporary license, the one that you said is to be called if the new license doesn't come within 60 days. The DMV customer service personnel will no doubt be able to help you with the question as well as the airport security representative.

Again, Good Luck!!!!

Her trip is in 6 days, the temporary license renewal is good until 11/17.

Thank you all :) Yes, DebbieB is correct - we're leaving in 6 days :) So if that temporary one wasn't good enough for the airport, I was worried about what would happen. However, I took the advice several of you gave and called the airport directly. They said to bring the temp. one and the expired one and I should have no problem. (I can't use the expired one to drive, but it proves I have been a resident here for at least 4 years) I am carrying both now anyway, so no big deal - phew!

As for online renewal, I wish! We can renew our auto tags online, but not a drivers license. We have to go to the courthouse and get a new pic. (I don't know why they can't print out a new card right there...but we get a temporary one which is a flimsy piece of paper with a REALLY BAD black and white copy of your pic on it - that's why I was worried about airport secuity :) However, we never have to retake the eye exam - how scary is that! LOL :)

Thanks again for all your help :)

Laurie, properly ID'd to fly :)

In Minnesota, the temporary license as long as it's nnot expired) plus the expired license [/i]are[/i] your license until the new permanent one arrives. We're told to drive, you need both of them together until the permanent one arrives.
Oldest DD flew last year with her temporary and expired license and had no problem.

The pertinent question here is whether the temp has a picture on it ... without a picture, even with the expired license. you may have trouble. Do you have a passport?

Having said this, I learned something VERY important and interesting this week. I travel weekly for my job, and this past week in Philly, I had my wallet stolen. Now, interestingly, I had my passport on me, so I knew that I'd be ok at security. But just out of curiousity, I asked the US Airways agent what would have happened if I did not have my ID -- I jokingly answered for him "guess I'd have been on the train, huh?". However, he told me that the TSA could not deny me boarding...that they have a special procedure to follow, and that it would be pretty aggravating, but I would have been able to get home. Let me tell you that I feel alot better knowing this! I have had nightmares about losing my wallet somewhere far away, and have to find some way other than an airplane to get home.

Moral of the story, if you don't have your ID for some reason, ask to talk to a manager right away so that they can help you.

Jillpie, how long did it take to get the new one after renewing online?

I have two weeks before I leave and I just renewed online, I am hoping it will be here, if not I am wondering if I can get to the Registry to get a temp one before we go.

Thanks.

I think it was just a few days. It was unbelievable, so easy and convenient.
