Flying with previous blood clots

I'm for sure going to ask my doctor about this, but I have had had previous blood clots in my lungs- twice! I don't know what this means for flying, although I guess I flew after the first time. Do I have to get special stockings? Driving is kind of out because my car won't make the trip and I can't rent a car. I wonder if my meds will need adjusted for the day of the flight? Anybody out there with experience? We are going in December.

I too have had two pulmonary embolisms on the lung, as well as a DVT in my right calf and a stroke when I was 18. I have flown after all of them...although a considerable time after the CVA (stroke). I am 7 years since my last clot but I still wear TEDs (compression stockings that are prescribed by the haematologist) depending on how bad the swelling is in my leg. If flying I would absolutely wear them. I wear them on long car and train journeys too and for any extended periods of sitting or if having any type of surgery. As for medication, your doctor is obviously best qualified to answer this as lot will depend on the underlying issues behind your PE's (if there are any). For me, my meds never changed when flying/traveling. It was just the same dose but with extra precaution like extra water, keeping mobile, exercise lower limbs and avoiding alcohol.

I'm finishing my course of warfarin after a DVT, and my doctor is taking me off the warfarin three days before my flight, I'm taking a Xarelto two hours before take off, coming and going, and on one baby aspirin per day during the trip and upon my return.

He wanted me to have something for the flight down and back, but didn't want me having to worry about diet restrictions and rough rides while on warfarin.

Definitely get your doctor's advice regarding any adjustments to your medications. Support stockings are commonly worn as a preventative measure. How long is your flight? If it is a long one, try to stand and stretch out your leg muscles during your flight.

Have a wonderful time!

Just to add to the other recommendations: Get compression socks- prescription is necessary if getting from drug store/medical place. You can get compression dress socks through Gold Toe store- we get them from the outlet store but you might be able to get them online- not sure.(not as good but better than nothing if you can't get prescription from doc)

If possible, purchase seats on the plane with a little more legroom. If you are flying SW, see about getting on first to obtain one the first seats/bulkhead.

Driving wouldn't be a great answer, bc movement is key. Make sure you get up and move around at least every two hours.

definitely ask your doctor about your medicine.

Good luck. Hope you have a great trip
