Flying with Newborn?

Firstly... congrats! :thumbsup2

I am due on July 12th and like yourself had booked to go away before I got pregnant. I'm meant to be going on Sept 5th so if all goes to plan the baby will be about 8 weeks old. I have almost swayed towards cancelling (have until June to cancel) but seeing someone else going for it is making me re-consider.

I had look into changing our flights until later in the year but it would involve travelling from Belfast to "the mainland" whereas the flights we have are direct.

Decisions, decisions... :scratchin

I am guessing some will think I am being self serving and selfish, but I will have more help around me there than I will at home alone. Plus I have looked into it now and consulted various peoples views

No I don't think people think that, people are just giving their experience of having a newborn for the first time, I am sure the baby would be fine however the last thing I would want to do 6 weeks after giving birth is go on a 9 hour flight. I was thinking about you rather than the baby. Though if you eat a healthy diet and do some gentle exercise it should help you keep your energy levels up so you feel better for the flight. I would recommend Pilates as it will strengthen the muscles used during the pregnancy, strenghthing the tummy and pelvis area as after birth I felt my insides were going to drop out of me and pilates really helped.

regarding how you'll feel after the birth - each person is different.

I felt incredibly great pregnant and incredibly great afterwards as well. Physically that is. My problem was post-partum blues. And the perfect cure for that is WDW! ;)

As i mentioned, we were at WDW for 2 weeks when my son was 6 weeks old and it was fine. I felt fine and he felt fine. He was born in April, so i guess the trip was towards the end of May.

Perhaps you'll feel tired after birth, perhaps you won't. There is no way of knowing until you get there. Physically i felt perfectly well, both immediately after the birth and 4 weeks later. Each person is different.

At least it won't be too hot...if it was August that would complicate things.

Good luck..my main worry would be if a caesearean is needed...would you be fit for travel?...if the birth is straightforward you should be fine , just very tired.:)

At 6 weeks I was exhausted organizing a trip to the shops..a trip to florida would have finished me off...:)

My main fear would be if it didn't sleep...........:scared1:

I've had 3 kids, none of whom slept through til they were about 2 :sad2:
Early days I felt like a zombie

BTW, BA let you fly from 48 hours old! So I'm figuring there is no medical reason why a baby can't fly almost immediately. I can understand others syaing you might be shattered, but it's a holiday and you will be relaxing in the sunshine. I can't think of a nicer way to spend those early days with your firstborn! I am very much of the mindset that children will fit in to your lives as much as you allow them to. Have baby will travel :goodvibes

I agree that life should not stop when you have a child, but when you haven't got any children it's impossible to imagine what it will be like. I got sick to death of people telling me how my life would change, how tired, stressed it would be etc, etc, and it drove me MAD :scared1: . But boy were they right ;) !! I'm sure noone is suggesting that Anna shouldn't travel, but maybe just to give it a little more time to see how she and the baby is.
