Flying with Meds

We will be flying in October and will only have carryons. DD take 3 diff meds and all are controlled substances. Do I need to get a note from her doctor or are the prescription bottles enough? We don't want to risk her not having her meds. Thanks

It shouldn't be an issue if you keep them in their prescribed bottle and are not liquid. (if they are liquid I am sure in it's correct bottle it would'nt be an issue but I don't know for sure.)

We fly no problem with ours. DH and I each have our own pain medication that we carry on. No way would we check them in the checked baggage. And we have never had an issue.

I also take my medications on the plane. As long as they are in the original prescription bottles, they are just fine. Serious things could happen if I don't have my meds... so, I have to have them with me. I am sure I am not the only person in the world like that (or I hope not... that would be scary!)

If the meds aren't liquid then even the original prescription bottle isn't necessary (assuming you're not crossing any international borders). TSA is not in the drug enforcement business. They don't care what non-liquid medicines you're carrying. You can easily put the meds in pill sorting containers and TSA won't care.

That being said, I prefer to bring the original prescription bottles in case of emergency. If say the bottle spills or water gets in the bottle, you'll have the prescription info with you to discuss with the pharmacy. If you're in some kind of accident, you'll have the prescription info that doctors can see so they'll know what you're taking. So, I do bring original prescription bottles but it has nothing to do with TSA. I don't put the bottles in any special bag to declare to TSA; I just leave pills in my regular carryon. Liquid meds and injectable meds (prescription and over the counter) I do put in a clear gallon sized ziploc that I show to TSA but pills do not come out of my carryon or get declared. All meds should stay in carryons just in case checked bags go missing.

You should be fine with the bottles (frankly, you *should* be fine even if they aren't in the original bottles).

And...

NEVER, EVER, EVER, put your medication in your checked luggage. It should always be in your carry-on. With the exception, of something like tylenol/advil which is generally easy to replace and not life-saving (though, as some one prone to headaches, I always have some in my carry-on).

I put my pills in one of the weekly reminder cases, put it in my carry on and have never had a problem with TSA. Even liquid medications are okay through TSA as they are exempt from the 3-1-1 rule. We also take my DD's diabetic supplies in our carry ons and never even get a second look from TSA.

It's as ClanMcCulluch suggests--TSA has (and should have) no interest in people's medications --especially pills. And we always have ours in pill containers--never in the original bottles.

As mentioned before, even liquid meds aren't a problem. I've taken full sized bottles of liquid cough syrup with me and it wasn't an issue. I just pulled them out during screening to show them. They didn't have to be in the same bag as other liquids.

In fact, they should not be in the bag as the other liquids. Only liquids 100mL or less should be in that baggie. Liquids that are exempt (i.e. medicines) should be in their own baggie (or not in a baggie at all, I just like to be careful in case of spills).

Me either.

I do however divide up my pills into 2 seperate bags. I keep enough on me for the trip, plus a few days. Then I have more in a seperate bag. That way if I loose one bag or the other I am ok and don't get myself into a panic.
