We are flying down in 10 days and my mom, who is going with us, is a diabetic. How should we take her supplies? She only takes Lantus once a day, so we don't have to worry about multiple types of insulin, and she is taking two pens (one will cover her for the trip, but just in case). Does she need to have those in the box with the script? What about her needles, does she need the whole box for the script? The same for testing lancets. Or can we take what we need and declare it?

That's a great link. Very informative!
When DD was young we just informed the screener of her supplies including needles. Now that she is on the pump, we inform the screener before she goes thru the MRI type machine. Never had any issues!

Thanks for the link! It doesn't really say though if you have to provide a prescription for the needles or insulin. This isn't a big deal?

We brought one the 1st couple times. Never been asked for one!

My husband travels with needles and a drug that men aren't usually prescribed, or when men do use it it's for bodybuilding purposes. (the things you end up taking when you have a pituitary tumor...) The ONLY time anyone has EVER wanted his prescription info was when he entered Australia, and that's because it's an illegal drug there if you don't have a prescription. Luckily we check those things for his international travels, and he had one box with the pharmacy label on it (with his name, doctor's name, etc).

No one has ever cared even a little bit about his needles or drugs at all domestically. If the TSA needed prescription labels they would state that.

I'm a diabetic too. I use a Victoza pen. I do put it and it's needles in a separate quart bag (usually with my contact lens solution) in the bin with my 3-1-1 bag. There have been times I've forgotten to pull them out though. They have never received a second look. My mom is also a diabetic. She uses Humalog insulin in a vial (with insulin syringes) three times a day and also uses a Lantus pen twice a day. She just puts two vials of Humalog, enough syringes for the trip, two Lantus pens, the Lantus pen needles, and a bunch of lancets for her glucometer all in a gallon bag (with the Humalog vials and Lantus pens secured their own little insulated bag) and puts it in the bin with her 3-1-1 bag. Like me she sometimes forgets to pull out the diabetic supplies. Again no one has ever even questioned them. No prescription has ever been asked for and the TSA agents haven't even looked to see what they are.

Thanks for answering helpfully! I just wanted to make sure we didn't need it for sharps. Hate to drag it all along when its not needed.

Not a diabetic, but have flown with needles and injects before. I put them in a separate 3-1-1 bag, and they just went through the xray machine without incident.

Best of luck on your flight!

My dh is diabetic and uses an insulin pump. We have flown out of LAX and Ontario airports. We have never been asked to take out the needles, pump supplies, or the insulin out of the insulated bag with a frozen insert. :confused3Now coming home from Hawaii we have always had to show all of it (Honolulu and Maui). I always pack the prescription papers you get when you pick up the scrip but not the actual insulin box with the scrip attached.
