We will be flying out of Burlington, VT with one stop in NYC. We will fly Jet Blue. How necessary is it to book our DD her own seat or do you think we can survive with her on our lap?

You have to book a seat for any child age 2 or over, so you don't have a choice.

As PP poster said, JetBlue only allows under 2 to fly without their own ticket. Sorry to be the giver of bad news. Travel safe and have a great vacation.

Same for all airlines.

OP - might be a good idea to go to JetBlue's website and read their rules/policies before booking.

The rule is actually set by the FAA, not Jet Blue (just don't want the OP to waste time trying to find an airline that would allow her child to fly as a lap child).
