I need some advice. We will be flying with our 6 month old daughter. She is on Good Start fomula (the purple can) and can only drink the ready to feed liquid. I have checked Good Start's website, and this formula is not carried by grocery stores near Disney. She has severe reflux and this is the only formula that works for her.

Does anyone know if I can get through airport security with 8 32oz cans of formula? They are unopened of course, but I didnt' know what would happen at the security checkpoint. I'm afriad of putting them in my checked baggage...

Well, flying from the UK, you certainly couldn't. Even people carrying on the amount needed for the flight itself had to open the liquid and drink some. Even in the sealed cardboard cartons - so they had to pour the contents into the feed bottles after to keep it anywhere near sterile. Don't know if your internal flights are so strict.

I know, that's my problem! I read that too, so I'm not sure what they'd do if I show up with that much formula. But, I also don't want to end up with our trip destroyed because she's miserable without her formula! Oh, how I wish she could tolerate the powdered kind!

Are you driving while in Florida? If you are there is a babies r us on Florida mall rd. It is not far from the airport. They sell the purple cans. We have the same problem w/DS. Now that he is older he can use the orange travel cans which helped so much while in the world.

The other thing we were told was to have a doctors note saying that is the only formula you can use. See if the pedi has trial size samples. Ours did.

We just did this in april and we were not asked to do anything with it I put it in a large ziploc bag andtook it out of the diaper bag and sent it thru Xray. They didn't even bat an eye.

The large cans can go in checked bags.

We went in Oct with out 6 month old son. We were able to carry a week worth of formula on the plane with us. We packed most of it and carried two days on out carry on. We also packed a week worth of baby food without any problems. We just packed all the formula and food in a separate bag so in case it broke or leaked, we would not have a problem when we unpacked out luggage. Hope this helps!::

I think the rule is that you can only carry enough with you to get you to your destination, and the rest should be packed in the checked bagagge. Have you thought about mailing it to your resort? And then carrying some with you? We flew to OR from Chicago with my 6 month old(at the time) we brought 2 of those cans with us--carry on and had no problems as long as you follow the rules for having them in carryon (in a clear bag/take them out at security, etc.)

Why are you afraid of checking them? They are cans right? Not glass?

When we took my DS, we checked most of his formula, as it was way to heavy to carry on the plane. It was fine. We just had to spread it out among the bags to make sure that one of our suitcases wasn't 400 lbs. :rotfl:

I would do three things in your shoes -

1. carry on as much as possible (you never know what may cause a flight delay)
2. carry an entire vacation's worth in your checked bag
3. ship an entire vacation's worth to your resort

The worst that will happen is you will have to carry the unused portion back in your checked luggage. It seems worth it to me to have the ultimate peace of mind.

Good luck and have a great vacation!

You've already gotten great ideas! I don't think they can make you taste it anymore. I recently flew with pumped breastmilk and had no problem at all.

Thank you all so much! I knew this was the right place to come for great advice!

Probably because it will be hard to replace and there is this unsavory habit airlines have of losing luggage. :) Spoken by one whose son spent a day in ballerina pajamas because his clothes were in the luggage that got delayed and all his cousins were girls... :rotfl:

I agree with the other poster.

ship what you might need
also pack in checked luggage
take a few in carryon

One additional item. Put some in each suitcase. Don't put it all in one suitcase.

Mark your suitcase very well. put your personal info on the outside and again on the inside with your travel info and a phone number.

Are you taking a direct flight. That helps too.
You just never know with luggage.

I soo agree with this. Especially after our last flight home a few weeks ago, when American Airlines was canceling all those flights due to the MD-80 debacle. Our luggage went to Dallas even though we didn't (they rescheduled us on a flight the next day). We didn't get our luggage back until four days after we arrived home. (Dallas was only half the trip for us).

You never know what might happen. I'd ship them UPS or FedEx (something where you have the ability to track your shipment from home). We did UPS one trip and it worked great. You can go to their site and figure out how much it will cost to ship and also how long it will take so you know how far in advance you need to send it so it arrives with a day or two of your arrival. Make sure to your Resort name, with "for Guest____" (primary person on reservation), and your arrival date. That worked swimmingly. :)

For something your dd definitely MUST have and isn't easily found or replaced where you're going, I think taking a few extra steps is worth effort just for the peace of mind it will give you.

hth!

Is this a special formula for reflux, or does this just work for your baby? My DD also has reflux and i have never tried this brand. Is it a milk based formula or something else? We have tried every Similac and she is on Alimentum now but it is SOOOOO expensive! Thanks for the help- I realize this is OT from your original post:)
