My sister and I are going to Salem, MA in early October and would be flying from Detroit to Boston most likely on Northwest then driving up to Salem. Neither of us have flown to Boston before. Any tips, advice would be most welcomed! Any suggestions on rental car companies there? Driving tips etc.

Thanks!

Driving advice? Get your helmet and driving gloves. :lmao: :lmao: Sorry, driving can be a bit of an adventure here in MA.

Logan airport has all the major players as far as car rentals go, and pretty much anyone you use, you'll need to shuttle from the terminal to pick up your car. Space is at a premium at Logan.

You might also want to look into flying into Manchester NH (airport code MHT) and driving down to Salem MA.

Yikes! :scared1: I just compared the fares from DTW to Boston and DTW to Manchester and there is a HUGE difference. DTW to BOS is $188 and DTW to MHT is ~$350!!

Boston it is then!

I live south of the city, so MHT is rarely an option for me, but I know some folks prefer it. That's a big difference, and I'd stick to Boston as well.

I work in Salem, MA...I hope you have hotel reservation already because the whole month of October is insane in this area...once you rent the car just follow Route 1A into Salem...all the rental car agencies are offsite so just go with the cheapest one.

Okay, Salem is NOT on any real highway, so you have a couple of options for getting there. Head north out of Logan or the car rental agency, on Route 1A. Bear slightly left at the rotary/roundabout you can drive through. 1A turns into Route 60.
After a couple of miles, you’ll come to a small rotary/roundabout. DRIVE CAREFULLY ¾ of the way around it, onto Route 107 North. You’ll drive through Saugus/Lynn Marsh, then the city of Lynn (lots of traffic lights) then into Salem.
Or, go halfway around that rotary/roundabout, then about two more miles and take Route 1 north. If it’s after 2 PM on a weekday, merge CAREFULLY into traffic. Drive about eight miles, then take Route 95/128 north for about two miles, stay in the middle lane so when the two highways split you’ll be on the correct one (128). Take exit 25A or 23S and follow the signs to Salem.
Um, where are you staying?

My take on driving in Boston..................................... DON'T :scared1:

I'm a 47 year NE native and worked in the city for years.

However, that experience is halpful in Florida now and especially at WDW while driving the bus.

Ah, but passengers arriving at Logan and driving to Salem wouldn't be driving in Boston :)
East Boston, north through Revere, then Lynn, then Swampscott, then - voila! - Salem (using The Mayor's instructions, which are much more direct than mine)
