Any advice, tips or suggestions? Just started looking into flights for August 2014 (based on August 2013 info). So far it looks like American Airlines has the best option (YYZ to DFW to HNL).

We have flown West Jet from YYZ, Air Canada and United. The west jet flight and Air Canada were both good. The only thing we didn't like about Air Canada was when we had a layover in the states it switches to United and they were horrible. Always late and terrible service. When flying AC through Vancouver! Awesome! Loved it! West Jet was on time if not early, had the entertainments systems and great service. Seats got a little uncomfortable on the long overnight flight home though as it is more air bus like. We had our lay over in Vancouver which was a fantastic airport. Going through customs there was a breeze. We have had lay overs in LA, San Fransico and Seatle as well, but loved Vancouver. San Fransico was our next fave. Time wise they were all about the half way mark.
We have also gone to Hawaii from Detroit with Delta. It was March Break and way cheaper to drive there. They were okay until the route home. They were late, VEry late and then they lost our luggage. A family joke now as the whole trip our kids kept saying Delta stands for Don't expect luggage to arrive . It arrived eventually and was delivered to our home near Hamilton.
If you don't mind a drive, I have noticed that Chicago is much much cheaper then here and you can get a direct flight to Hawaii. For our family of 5, that may be the way for us to go next time.

I have also found better to book sooner then later as the flight prices seem to go up and not down.
Good luck!

We have been to Maui twice and Aulani last year and all 3x drove to Buffalo and went there. It is such a long flight there is no way I was dealing with Pearson and then a layover somewhere else.

We also always added on a night or 2 in California, on the way to Aulani last year we did San Diego for 3 days. Easier on everyone with the jetlag and extended our trip a little seeing some new things.
