If you fly standby on an earlier flight than scheduled, what happens to your luggage?

American will let you confirm an earlier flight w/in 3 hours of flight time on the same day, but if connecting, each leg has to be confirmed separately, so I can only confirm the first leg and then fly standby on the second leg to try to get an earlier flight.

Will my luggage stay with the later scheduled flight if I happen to be able to get on standby, or will it be transferred to the new flight? If doing this, is it easier to just do carry on so I don't even have to deal with checked luggage?

it is recommended that you do not check luggage if trying to stand by with a connecting flight. Airlines MAY allow you to change with checked luggage but it is not guaranteed
