I am trying to book my trip for next Christmas. Has anyone flown out of the Kitchener-Waterloo airport? I will be flying KW to Detroit then to Fort Myers. There is only one hour between landing in Detroit and then flying out to Fort Myers....does anyone have any experience going through US customs? Any advice would be greatly appreciate!

Andrea

We flew out of K-W to Orlando, via Detroit, last August. It was pretty slick. You go through customs in Detroit (not in K-W). When we went, I was the only woman passenger on our flight to Detroit! Pretty nice ratio if you ask me! :thumbsup2 Since the person doing the security check was also female, I was the lucky recipient of the only check on board! It was the most thorough check I've ever had. They were friendly though. Coming back from Detroit, however, there were many other females. There's just enough time on that flight for a drink. It's a smaller plane, so just be aware that you'll feel more bumps. It was no problem for me though.

Once in Detroit, you immediately go through customs. Pretty normal. Since your connection flight is so quick, you may want to ask where your gate is located. It's a large, beautiful airport so directions may be necessary, but people were friendly to help. We had a 2.5hr layover so we had time for lunch and to explore the beautiful airport. Of course, we went the day after the maintenance workers for NWA went on strike, so our flight was delayed for a few hours. That shouldn't happen for you though.

Have a great trip! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for your response. I think flying out of KW will be better than flying out of Toronto. I will only have a 55 minute lay over...hopefully I will have a seat near the front of the plane. I really like the idea of having quite a few men on the flight...hopefully some cute men to look at. :cool1:

Did you book directly with NWA or through a travel agent?

Thanks for your help!
Andrea

Flying out of K-W is so much better than flying out of TO! We got there 1.5hrs before our flight, and that was too early!! It sure beats driving to Toronto and waiting 3hrs!!

We booked through the NWA website. No problems at all. Just make sure you are on the Canadian site. I filled out all the info, on the US website, and was shocked by the lack of taxes! But, we couldn't get the order to go through. We phoned NWA directly and they said to make sure we go to the Canadian site (I guess our address wasn't being accepted). It was back to reality!!! ;) It was still a pretty good deal though. Also, you can book your seats on both legs of your flight at time of booking (for no extra charge).

The NWA website looks pretty easy to navigate. I am so excited that I won't have to fly out of Toronto!!! Last Christmas, everyone seemed to be in awful moods - no holiday spirit even at 4:30 am!

I might have a few more questions for you, so I might pm later on.

Thanks,
Andrea

Can anyone give me a little more info on the KW airport?

What airlines fly out of it and to where?

I have heard of many southern destinations like Dominican Republic and Mexico but did not know that they had just flights available.

We are only 1 hour from KW and any airport is better than Pearson!

I would love to fly from KW. Can you get a flight to Orlando? :confused3

Northwest Airlines flies out of K-W airport, but only flies to Detroit. Then, from Detroit, you can transfer to a larger plane to go virtually anywhere else.

Just this winter, Skyservice now flies out of K-W. They only fly to Dominican Republic, Cuba and Mexico. I haven't tried these direct flights yet, but I've heard pretty good things.

When we flew with NWA out of K-W, it was such a treat not to have to get to the airport so early!! The crowds are significantly less too. HTH! :)

You can go to Orlando from KW, but you'd have to transfer in Detroit. We did this last August.
