Hi there,

I have never even considered this before, but DH and I are bringing his little 13 yo brother to WDW with us as a graduation gift next month. We are driving from Niagara, and flying out of Buffalo, what documentation will he need???

Passport if you have it - but if you don't, birth certificate is OK. I'd also have a letter written from his parents stating that you have their permission to cross the border with him.

Officially you are to have a notarized letter from his parents giving you permission. This is also true if one parent is crossing the border without the other. Our city hall has a form that is filled out and taken in by the non travelling parent and signed, sworn and stamped. Been doing this every trip since ds was 3 and we started travelling cross border. Nobody has actually ever looked at it but I have been asked if I did have it.

It has to be stamped?! I just read on the customs website that it has to be just a letter... not notarized or anything.

I'm taking two grandkids to WDW this summer as well and we're also flying out of BUF. I'll be taking along a notarized letter for each child, signed by each parent that allows me to take the child out of the country and to allow me to authorize any medical procedures should it become necessary. I've taken other grandkids on trips out of the country in previous years and each time I've taken a travel letter and without fail....each time I've been asked to produce it.

Does it have to be notarized really though? I looked up the info on the Customs website and it just states "a letter". The child is 13... will that maybe help? :P

Let me put it this way... If I'm in a foreign country with someone else's child and an emergency comes up, I don't want to be worried if my letter will be accepted or not. I have never tried to use a non-notarized letter, so I can't say whether or not it would be denied. But a thirteen year old is not legally responsible so I doubt that would have any impact.

Better safe than sorry. When my ds was two I took him to Florida and I got pulled into a customs room because I didn't have written consent from the other parent..and this was trying to get back into Canada!!!!

Make sure the letter states that you and your husband have permission to make medical decisions in case of any emergency.

Whenever we cross the border I always take a letter from my DS's dad just as a precation. He puts on a copy of his photo id with siggy and includes his cell number incase they want to reach him. I have never been asked for it but it's nice to have just in case. My DB took my son across the border I sent a letter signed with him just in case, I thought it might look a little funny with my DB in his early 20's and DS a younger teenager. They were never asked either. As for the airport itself you only need a BC for the kids.
