Flying or Driving?

Fly or Drive to Disney?

  • Drive-I can't afford flying. (Or I live near Disney)

  • Fly-I can NOT sit in a car for SO long (Farther Away from Disney)

  • Torn Between the Two

And freedom can also be looked at from the perspective of being free from sitting behind the wheel for 18 hours....free to let someone else do the driving (aka the pilot) ;););)

and don't consider the free oj (while yummy), very free when it costs dh and I (each) 2 vacation days that were spent on the road and not having fun in WDW. ;)
That's a total of 4 lost vacation days spent driving on a highway......

So I guess freedom means different things to different people :thumbsup2

Well put Maria......freedom to me does not mean 1.5 days driving each way to get to the most magical place on earth. Our freedom is 30 mins drive to teh airport, park right at the terminal, 2 min walk to the counter, wait an hour to get on a plane and in 2.5 hours we are in Orlando and I see the Magic Express bus.....woohoo....don't have to worry about my luggage, I hop on the bus and its "Magic Time"....aaahhhh that is freedom. Time=Money=Freedom for us!

Our first trip in 2005 I begged DH to drive because I had never flown and was convinced I never wanted to. Well we flew and I loved it. I will never drive 20 hours somewhere that I can get to in 2 hours by plane. That would take up over 3 days of my trip that could be better spend at Disney.

we are going for the first time in June, I wanted to fly and he wanted to drive. We live in Houston, so it will be along drive. He won out and we will be driving. I was already depressed about the drive back, so we agreed we would stop for a full day and night at Panama city beach. Maybe we will fly next time, although my husband seems to believe disney is a once in a lifetime deal:rotfl2:

We have driven twice out of the last 4 times we have gone in the last 3 years and my wife and I vowed we would never drive again. We waste two full days like that. I couldn't even imagine driving from Houston. We live on the MS Gulf Coast, and heck, I wouldn't drive from here to Houston. Is there not a non-stop out of Houston to Orlando. You may be spending just as much money on driving (Hotel stays, gas, wear/tear, munchy and food stops etc.) I would keep working on it. I agree the drive back is murder. You say you will be stopping in Panama City on the way back. The first time we went, I had a room booked in Lake City on the way back, and I was nodding off while driving on the way there, I would have never made it to Panama City.:thumbsup2

How do people drive down on a budget?

you live about 534 miles away.

so it is not a long trip.

you know if I lived as far as most of you - might enjoy flying - only fly when it is cheaper than driving.

one year flew both me and mother at $110 there and back

this year they want $235.20 to $255 for just me. that is a car payment.

We drive from Indy.....and it takes about 15-16 hours.

If cost were no issue, I'd fly without a 2nd thought. I'd love to hop on a plance and be down in Orlando in a couple of hours.

However, there are 4 of us and even with 'cheap' airfare of say $79 / pp each way by the time you add on taxes / fees you are up to at least $700.

We stay in condos offsite, so we would also have to rent a car for another couple of hundred dollards for the week.

The cost to drive is no where near $1000. We usually break it up into 2 days of driving...we either stay with family in TN or use hotel points for free nights so there is no real cost for those and the gas only cost about $200.

Out of the 20 trips I've taken I have only flown once (our honeymoon). It takes us 2 days to drive (when I was a kid we'd drive straight through though) We usually stay in a suite on the way down for about $99. So we can get there for $300. It would cost at least $1,000 for all 5 of us to fly and then we'd have to rent a car for 2 weeks.

WOW.....living in Canada we pay ALOT for our flights down to Orlando compared to the US States.....but I will still fly regardless;)

Fly. It's too darn far to sit in the car with Dh and 4 kids.

We flew in Feb for $676 for all 6 of us. 5 hrs (rt) vs 40+ hrs (rt) - there's no question for me.

There are advantages to both forms of transport. Unless you live near an airport with cheap flights and dont have to worry about border delays (which makes u cross the night before to ensure youll make your morning flight) then flying might be for you. If you bring lots of luggage and large strollers then driving might be for you. I find a lot of these cheap flights people post are on weekdays. If you want to fly a friday night, saturday or sunday to Orlando and RT then you wont see many of those deals. Also most people need to travel around school holidays and that in itself will triple the price of airfare.

If you like me, Ill spend about $1000 at the prime outlets and would now cost me a fortune to bring them back on a flight with me (I miss the days of free baggage), let alone ill need a rental car. If you are not leaving WDW and live near an airport and get cheap flights, then I think flying is probably better.

we usually fly but are driving for the second time this year. We really like having a car and the whole come and go as you please thing.

I remember when flying use to be so fun and glamorous. Now a days it is far far from it. I remember when I was little and would go to the airport to pick up friends (we did not fly much) i thought it was so exciting. Now when I see an airport all I see is long lines, rude people, tight seating, and anxiety. Not my idea of glamorous or fun.

It however really is a toss up for us with little ones. This time we are off property so we would have to rent a car so we are just going to drive.

peyjax : Now when I see an airport all I see is long lines, rude people, tight seating, and anxiety. Not my idea of glamorous or fun.

I simply don't experience this ? You can have long lines in traffic jams on the interstate driving too if you want to add that. Can I say one thing ? CAPITOL BELTWAY. ;) I'm just saying. Fly in and out of FL 3-4x a year on average the security lines, while daunting to look at most times, we find to move very smoothly and orderly ? Never more than 15 min in line. Orlando is one of the better airports too. And I must say, Philly is getting better too. We drive 1 hour to get to the Philly airport----but have also gone out of our way and driven to Newark, Atlantic City and even as far as Baltimore to fly down if the fare was good.

I don't find either flying or driving all the way to FL "glamorous". And talk about tight spaces. Yes. Airplanes can be tight for sure.....but it's all of a less than 2.5 hr flight for us. So no biggie. Being cramped in a car for over 1,000 miles is just as tight. And nowadays, I'm amazed at all the stuff families with young children pack. I see double strollers and car seats getting checked at the curb all the time. We don't experience anxiety either with flying, but I can respect the fact that some do. Rudeness. Gosh...that's everywhere.....even in WDW. Can never ever escape from that unfortunately. But I hardly find that airport/flying specific.

I can certainly understand how people who cannot get decent air fares would want to fly. I honestly can see that. We are lucky in Philly because PHL to MCO has lots of good competitive airfare.

But in my eyes, when you drive, you do have the hidden charges (extra snacks and meal stops, sleep overs at motels, and more importantly to us, is the wear and tear on our vehicle. A round trip of over 2,000 miles a couple times a year is definitely a liability. We have broken down on the road too and I can tell you from first-hand experience, there is nothing worse than that to put a major damper on a vacation. It was back in 1994 on a trip from PA to VA to visit Williamsburg. Our transmission just went. No warning. Car just died. We had our mechanice do the usual oil change and tune up prior to the trip and he said all was good before we left. I had 3 small kids in the car at the time (ages 1, 3 and 6). Luckiy, bil and sil were driving with us. But they had two young kids of their own. We were about 30 miles away from our hotel thankfully. Bil had to take his family to hotel, then drive back to get us and bring us to the hotel while we sat on the side of the road with three little ones in VA Aug heat. Our 5 day stay was ruined by struggling to get tow trucks, our warranty company to pay bill (they refused and because we were in another state, the mechanic would not take a check from us).
We were a young couple and only had like 2 credit cards --neither which had enough open on them for the bill which was close to $3,500 ! So we had to rent a tow bar and rental and tow our car back to PA. We had enough for that.

Had other car problems on the road---nothing that severe. The last one was 2005 when our car started overheating on I-95. Got to Orlando and dh had to take it to a mechanic down there...losing a full day of vacation.

So to me, this is one of those hidden "costs" you take on when you choose to put that many miles on your car. And then again, I find the lost vacation days that we work so hard for, another one liability. It's literally that we are losing 4 vac days between the two of us (and I only get like 10 a year), when you calculate the time you need to use going back and forth. And my dh nor I never feel up to going back to work the day after we've been on the road for 2 days. We both feel sort of "hungover". Like some experience jet lag on long flights....we experience "road lag" :rotfl:

Lucily there's options for everyone....but just felt the above issues should be mentioned when driving. Since we experienced them first-hand, I would never doubt that they could happen when we drive. We just drove my dd's car down to FL in Feb. She goes to college down there. I got out and kissed the ground and the car that we made it with no issues ! :worship: :rotfl:

my car has had problems in Orlando - nothing like yours - the most I paid was $375 in car repair at WDW - liked it better when DVC could tell you about great places offsite. This was when a light flashed on the dashboard - and got it fixed there - would have been better off just driving it home.

my worst was the car was making this awfully noise - so took over to the same place that DVC recommended - my friend had driven over something while I was asleep.... no charge. despite them having to take the tire off the car to get the stuff out.

loved that place - King's tires I think.

another time it was a tire problem - then they offered to fix the tires - but I wanted new tires. won't drive on fixed or retrait tires. that I think was $125 for 2 tires (back in the 90's)

Since I go to Disney alot either was a big problem. but thanks for the reminder got to schedule a tire maintence before I leave next month.

Have a Honda - he gets excellent fuel - if I leave with a full tank. Only have to stop once for gas - that say if traveling with someone else and there is no rest stop close by will fill it up again if necessary. So 10 gallon tank - what $2.50 - so $25 for gas - $50 coming back. (sometimes a little more depends upon how much offsite stuff) $75 to $100 vs $235 - plus a rental car ($179 probably less) (staying offsite some this trip)

I never thought I would ever have the nerve to fly and was scared to death the first time I did. Now I couldn't imagine going without flying. The first 3 trips which we drove were so exhausting. When we took my soon at age 4, the 2 day car trip really did him in. I have flown 3 times and I can say that an hour and a half in the plane sure beats that 20+hours in a car!!!!!! We arrive refreshed and have so much more time for WDW!

Mmm hmmm. Taxes are crazy. When I lived in Toronto I flew too. I made it part of the budget because that long a drive just pushed me past my breaking point of ok in a car. Though I cheated and flew out of Buffalo most often. :thumbsup2

eta: for everyone. Did some quick numbers. This time around flying for us would be 1400+. That would be 2 flights from Canada, 2 from Jersey and rental car big enough to hold a scooter, maybe 2 (our vehicle can do that)

Driving is around 700 including hotel stays there and back and the cost of getting the people from Canada to NJ to hop in the car and drive with us.

So driving it is for us for now. If it's ever just DH and I again though I'm flying!! :rotfl:
