Flying on an earlier flight (Delta)...

While I sit here waiting for SWA to release fares for our October trip, I am keeping an eye on our options on Delta if the times for SWA don't work out for us.

Right now, there are two flights out of Detroit on a Saturday night, one leaving at 5:40pm and one that departs at 7:55pm. On that particular day, I am scheduled to be out of work at 11am, but do to the unpredictable nature of my job, it may be noon before I actually leave. This means that the latest we would hit the road is 1pm. It is about 2 hours and 15 minutes of actual driving time from my house to DTW. On a Saturday afternoon, I would assume that traffic will not be heavy, but accidents can happen. So, assuming we left at 1pm (worst-case work scenario), that would get us to the airport by 4pm (best-case traffic scenario). Then we would have to park (or return, if a rental) the car, shuttle over (if needed) and clear security. Neither of us will have any checked bags so that is not a concern.

This will be tight if we book the 5:40pm flight as it will leave us just over 90 minutes and I would be a ball of anxiety on the entire drive to the airport:eek:. If we book the later flight, we would still leave home at the same time and follow the same plan and still plan on arriving at the airport around 4pm. This would leave us a nice cushion if we encounter a major delay. If we are there too early, we will just hang out at TGI Friday's or something to kill the time.

Now my question...If we book the later flight and manage to arrive in time to make the earlier flight, what are our options? We are two adults so sitting together isn't important. We will only have carry-on luggage so overhead space will be needed so I plan to book Main Cabin instead of Basic Economy. How would we go about this and would there be any additional cost? Would we risk losing our spot on the later flight if we did "standby" on the earlier one?

I'm a little confused how you leaving at 1 with a 2 hour and 15 min. drive = you getting to the airport at 4? Really, I think you'd be fine for the first flight, however probably not worth it if you're going to stress over it all day.

If you book the 2nd and get there in time for the first, you could ask if there was room on the earlier flight. -If there is, they most likely would not charge you (we've had this happen once before and it worked out well). Having said that in recent years we've also asked (usually due to connecting flights) and they have always already been booked. I'm guessing your chances aren't great, since they're later flights and any issues that flights had earlier in the day could result in ppl. already waiting on standby lists etc., but I'd def. ask if you're there in time etc.

Book the later one and kill some time at the airport. The last thing you want to do is be stressed the day you leave for vacation.

If I am reading this correctly, I would be able to attempt to standby for the earlier flight for a $50 fee. What I am still a bit confused about is if you have to call in advance or if this is something that is arranged at the gate. Also, is the $50 fee applied only if you actually get a seat on the standby flight? Or are you paying it for the chance to get a seat?

Right now, I am just really hoping that we can get a decent time and fare on SWA out of Grand Rapids and we don't have to worry about driving to Detroit.

This is what your link says:
"Standby fee will be collected, but your card will not be charged until you are assigned a seat on the standby flight"

This is the statement under the "Same Day Standby" portion. The statement under the "Same Day Confirmed" does not stipulate that your card will not be charged until you are assigned a seat. It says...

Silver Medallion members, general SkyMiles members and non-members:
  • $50 USD Same-Day Change Fee - If your requested flight is same-day confirmed eligible
I assumed that a "same day confirmed" is a passenger who already holds a ticket for a flight THAT day and a "same day standby" is a passenger who does NOT yet have a ticket and is trying to get onto ANY flight. As someone who flies only once a year (at most) and has never flown standby, I need a little assistance in understanding the difference.

"Same day confirmed" means that you get a seat right away.

Either option requires that you have a ticket for a flight on the same day. Stand-by means that you're waiting until everyone gets on the plane to see who didn't show up. Confirmed means they gave you a seat before boarding because they had room.

Awesome! Thank you for the explanation:thumbsup2
