DH and I booked a SW ding fare at $40 each way for our Dec trip it was too good to pass up. We've never flown into Tampa but have drive there from WDW so are familiar with I-4.
Any tips or anyting different from MCO? I'm assuming not as busy.

Any recommendations for car rental and are they onsite like at MCO?

We once flew into MCO and drove to Tampa. We had to exchange our rental car which had a problem.. I did notice that the Alamo/National car place was not onsite; it was probably about 1/2 to 1 mile from the airport, but there was a shuttle bus. We were lucky, traffic on I-4 was not bad, so we had a fairly relaxing trip--I think it took about 1 hour 15 minutes.

We're also flying into Tampa due to a great rate. I have booked a rental through National Emerald aisle. I've never done it before so have no real advice to offer.

We fly into Tampa, and then drive to WDW. My son lives in Port Richey, and brings my grandsons to the airport, they then go to WDW with us. The last few times, I have reserved a car at Dollar Rental. They are at both airports, and I have had no problem with picking it up at Tampa airport, and dropping it at MCO. We're doing the same thing when we go in October.

the cost savings did not work out for us when we looked at the cost of renting a car in Tampa ( 240$ at tpa vs 99$ at mco ) for our december trip

but 98 R/T is a good price

As noted, Natl is a shuttle ride away, but not inconveniently so, and TPA's smaller airport may make up for the lost time. Thrifty, Dollar, Budget, Avis, and Hertz are onsite.
