I have reservations at Flying Fish for our family of 4 -- it's me, DH, DS(14) and DD(12). I'm looking at the menu and pictures, and I'm beginning to doubt whether or not I should keep it. I know DD and I would love the anything on the menu, the guys..not so sure. I am thinking my husband and son would like the snapper and salmon, but I know those sauces and the sides would scare them. Could he order the snapper with the sauce on the side and just a plain veggie in place of the leeks? Another question while we're on the subject -- is it just me, or does the steak here look...burnt? Is it suppose to be like that?
Would it be a waste to go to a restaurant like this and totally take apart the dish and expect it to still taste good?

Yes, it would probably be a waste.

In reality there is nothing 'out there' about FF but if simple alterations to meat and fish bother you then stick to ESPN or Planet Hollywood.

The steak is called a "Charred NY Strip" so yes it is burnt. They coat it with some seasoning then cook it for quite a long period and still it comes out rare/med. rare. It is a great steal especially with the foyot sauce served on top...Probably the best single steak on property.

ESPN or Planet Hollywood is not my idea of a great meal. It's ok for what it is, just not what I was looking for.
I know the sauces make the dishes extra special at FF, but I'm sure the quality of the food would be a cut above even without it. I wanted to know if leaving the sauces off the dish, or perhaps serving it on the side would be something they would even do.
I know me and DD would love Flying Fish, just not so sure about my husband and son. Maybe we could just ditch them for the night ;) .

Thanks for responding, Pirate Pete. It was actually your review here that made me look into Flying Fish.

FF is very flexible with sides....the snapper is delicious. We will be having dinner there in November.

The snapper does look delicious, I'm pretty sure my husband will enjoy it. It's good to hear that the steak is so good, my son loves a good steak so he can order that. I decided to keep the reservation and hope for the best. I really want to eat at FF so the boys will just have to go along.
Have a wonderful time in November, I'll be looking for your review of FF!

The foyot sauce can easily be served on the side with the steak but I would urge anyone who gets it to at least try it. It is fabulous.:thumbsup2

The scallops over risotto is my favorite when they have it (note there are only three or four scallops, though it's still too much food)...Otherwise I will order whatever they have with the risotto (and make sure someone else orders the steak so I still get some, lol)...They both are that good.

Personally the potato wrapped snapper does nothing for me, kind o dry and bland, IMO, but many folks love it.

I'm going to suggest they order the sauces on the side, but my bet is that they'll taste a little of it and end up using it all anyway.

This is the meal I am most looking forward to. I have studied the menu extensively and not only have chosen what I will be eating, but selected for the rest of the family too! This is all based on what I think WE all would like best ;) . I already decided on the scallops for myself, glad to hear it gets the big thumbs up from you. I wasn't aware that the risotto was a seasonal thing, which really makes no difference to me since I don't even know what risotto is  . I know I will not be disappointed.
