Dining Review: Flying Fish

Took the boat across Crescent Lake to The Boardwalk for dinner at Flying Fish (FF). We stopped over at the Abracadabra Bar to use the restrooms, but I almost wanted to plant myself down for a drink. The decor and mystery in that bar is astounding to me. That is how you theme a unique lounge.

We had a veteran waitress and her shadow (in learning mode). I got a non-alcoholic cucumber spritzer which was so good. We ordered our entrees, and the bread came out. It was warm, but pretty flavorless. The pepper butter gave it some flavor, but this is not a high-quality bread service in my opinion (especially compared to others I recently experienced). The waitress went a little over-the-top of how FF is rated #1 signature dining restaurant at WDW. I couldn't let that go unchecked and, gently, asked if Chef Tim M. was still in the kitchen. She said they rotate chef's constantly and didn't really answer my question. I posed the V & A angle and was told that it's not a dinner, but more like a 3-hour dining experience as she was a waitress there for 6 years. It was a good recovery answer.

She described the fish entrees very well. The Chilean Sea Bass with morsels of crab meat was superb (so I was told although my one bite confirmed it was very high quality). I asked for blackened salmon. We reminded the lead waitress I like an almost crispy outside with a flaky inside (tough to do, but this was claimed to be the #1 eatery). My salmon was slightly under blackened to my liking, but the inside was done just right. The portion size was laughably small as well as the roasted vegetables that accompanied it. The vegetables were incredibly well seasoned and cooked and I could have easily eaten a double portion them (whole mushrooms, brussels sprouts and small red potatoes).

She offered dessert, but wasn't interested. It was a very good meal but felt a little down since our last visit. FF was very busy (~5:30 PM).

For my previous meal at FF, I still think it was the best steak on property (I knew Yachtsman was on the next night's itinerary, so I wanted fish at FF). The service was decent, but I felt it had a tinge of upsellitus (made that word up). She wanted us to do the add-ons, the sparkling waters and over-boasting of FF being #1. I'm confident it is a mandate from management to employ those adders, but it became a bore to me. Add to that my waitress actually commented on how I ate the "whole" salmon fillet trying to be funny. I'm not exaggerating, it was a comically small piece.

Now that I had time to re-evaluate our meal, I would score the quality of fish at an 8, preparation 7, drinks 8, service 4, value even with 20% AP discount, 2, theming 5.

Overall, for me: 5/10 factoring in the portion size of my alleged salmon appetizer entree. We should have drove over to our favorite local fish eatery.

Thanks for the updated review. This is my fav resort eatery and I’m looking forward to returning in a few weeks. Uhhhh but I’m not missing dessert 😉.

I'd be interested in hearing/reading how your experience will be. Dessert was right down The Boardwalk or Beaches & Cream takeout.

We just ate here a few weeks ago and both food and service were outstanding. Actually, it was much better than our last trip about 5-6 years ago. DH wanted dessert and even though we're not huge fans of hazelnut, particularly Nutella, the dessert was 🤯!

so would you go back and get the steak next time? I keep hearing about how good it is, so we were planning on going there on our next trip.

Yes and without hesitation.
I was always amazed that the steak was touted to be the best item on the menu at this restaurant. I always thought this was because the customers didn’t know anything about seafood (or were trying to maximize the DDP), but now it seems that the restaurant doesn’t do seafood as well as it should. We used to go long ago, when it was a good seafood restaurant. They used to have a really good cheese platter back then, but, alas this was reduced to a shadow of its former self the last time we were there. We haven’t been back in several years and I doubt we’ll go anytime soon unless changes occur.

I share your sentiments 100%. I truly feel they relied on an outdated reputation and perceived, only in name, service and value.

I know I will only order a non-seafood meal on our next visit. Disappointed.

I went for the first time 2 years ago. I had wanted to for ever! Id heard of the steak but I love quality seafood felt wrong to go for steak. I got a dish with several types of seafood over pasta. It looked amazing!!! uh well, fresh..Im sure but bland and under seasoned. mediocre at best. I was shocked. Very disappointed.

I've always loved FF. I will have to say that after the Covid shutdown no restaurant seems to have the level of quality that it had prior, this includes FF. It's a shame but I still love going there. I still order the steak but to me it's not as good as it used to be. I can't even answer why.

Went with a “non adventurous food” friend for my first post pandemic visit and looked forward to the visit. We shared a tomato and fruit salad as a starter and it was a good choice despite my want for the pork belly appetizer (next time?).
Had no idea much of the produce came from the Land which is a great way to control the food specifications and just good long term planning in general. Our beverages were a rose for me (drunk throughout the meal. Dry yet fruity, perfect summer meal wine to my way of thinking) and a pina colada for gf.
For entrees, she had chicken with peas and carrots, a “grandmother” dish that appealed to her sensibilities, ultimately by name and taste. She found the meat very tender with a real chicken taste and liked the vegetables braised in herb butter Her only complaint was the bone in the airline cut as she felt it would be easier to eat w/o it.

I ordered the sautéed scallops which had a lovely brown color and were neither over or undercooked. Someone’s oops because they were over salted 😬. Fortunately, the waiter came to check shortly after my taste and took them back to the kitchen where they re-appeared forthwith. Same lovely texture, same nutty color, now seasoned properly.
I opted for the much longed for dessert while she had coffee. The “shell” dessert wasn’t on the menu so I went with the hazelnut and chocolate dacquiose. Out of my comfort zone (I’m not a chocolate fiend, lol) but technically correct.

By my lights, seafood should be their speciality but of course they offer other proteins as well. On one end, scallops are easy to master and thus it was telling that the fish cook doesn’t have this dish under his or her belt. Still, I’ll return for our traditional Christmas Eve meal and I’m upping the ante by ordering a more complex fish filet; everyone deserves one more chance.

Oh and for the record, my newbie friend’s favorite dining experience was at CG. Not sure if it was the fireworks or the plethora of appetizers (it was a special appetizer party), view or a combination but it’s the night’s meal she can’t stop talking about 😊
