Flying, even in December??

We're not going until December, but in light of all that is going on and my not being the greatest flyer, I'm trying to talk DH and the other family we are going with into driving down from Maryland. What are everyone's thoughts on flying even later this year? It would be about an 18 hour drive I'm guessing. Just curious, I didn't know who else to ask...Thanks in advance!

We are going September 22 and we are flying. Maine to Boston, Boston to Baltimore, Baltimore to Orlando. I will be bringing DH and my 4 children. This will be two of the childrens first flights. I am praying each day for strength and guidance about the right thing to do. However, I AM NOT GOING TO LET THE TERRORISTS GET THE BETTER OF US.

I just read that I can get a refund on our US airways tickets until 9/25 and since we leave 9/22 we are eligible for this, so this makes me wonder a little if I should change things around. But, so far I won't......It will be a somewhat surreal trip I think.

I know what you mean, even though we leave in three months, I still feel guilty even worrying about my vacation when there are people out there who don't know if their family is safe. But like many posters, I agree with living life to the fullest and am planning on going, I just don't know if I want to fly. I don't like flying to begin with and I realize security will be at it's highest, but you never know by December we could be in a full-blown war.

Well, enjoy your trip with your family as I will in December...it just may take me a little longer to get there!

I'm still flying down in December, as long as the airlines are back to "normal" by then. I know it will certainly make me sad, remembering those who lost their lives, and imagine what it was like for them.

KRWong: We used to drive down from baltimore and if you go straight thru, it was 15 -16 hours give or take. But we fly down these days and that's what we'll do in december. In the 2 hours it takes to fly from BWI to Orlando, in a car you're barely to Fredricksburg Va. My thought is that it will probably be safer to fly in the coming months than it was in the past.

Still planning to fly in December. Apprehensive? Yes, but all life involves risk. Driving I-95 for 16+ hours scares me more!!

I'm really unsure about what we're going to do. We have two trips planned...a long weekend in October for MNSSHP and then a week at Christmas. Here's what's freaking me out the most......

1. Flying on Christmas Day (12/25)
2. Flying back on New Years' Day (1/1)
3. Both those days being a Tuesday...the same day of the week the tragedy struck. I read somewhere that Tuesdays are the least crowded.....very skeptical right now!

pbhunt is right about flying is MUCH safer then car travel. I am an aerospace engineer and I LOVE planes. Don't get me wrong, the sound of them gets me a little nervous now. But the next couple of years are going to be the safest time to fly. Look at Israel; they have nonstop terrorist attacks. However, since the late 1970's when they implemented new security measures, not a single one of their aircrafts have been hijacked. The US and the FAA will take care of air travel.

Another fact that most people don't know is what a large part of our GDP (our economic worth) comes from aircraft sales. If people don't fly, airplanes won't sell, our economy will be hurt and the terrorists will win again. I guess what I am trying to say is FLY!! It is safe and an essential part of our economy.

Thank You aero99. What happened to those four planes is horrific; however, 131 planes departed from SFO on Thursday. That's only one airport! Those 4 planes represent a very, very small fraction of US air travel. If you get in a car accident, you don't quit driving do you? The chances of something happening to you on a commercial airline are extremely remote. Air travel is still way safer than driving, and gives you more time at your destination (the happiest place on earth).

for your input about flying to WDW. After a lot of thought and some calming down, I think we will be flying, barring an all out war, and tend to agree that air travel will be at its safest in years. I didn't really want to start my vacation tired and cranky from riding for 16+ hours to FL! Thanks again...god bless America!

We too are planning to leave on Sept. 22. I'm not too nervous about flying, hopefully they have tighten security. My concern is the parks and people saying to stay away from crowded places.....I swore his wouldn't get to me, but it is starting to.

We too are supposed to fly to Orlando from Cleveland in December. Originally my concern was the weather. Now the weather is the least of my concerns. I have heard from several people that the upcoming months are going to be the safest months for air travel that this country has seen. I am just going to keep praying and watching how things develop.
