Remember flying years ago and my daughter having lots of problems with her ears and pressure and suggestions....?

EARPLANES!!!!

I never fly without them. You can purchase them at Target for about $4.50. They come in a child's size as well as adult! There is a website if you want more information. www.earplanes.com

Here I am a pediatric nurse and I put adult Earplanes in the kids ears, tossed my husband a pair of the kid-sized Earplanes... So, moral of the story is buy the appropriate size(adult or child) and familiarize yourself with the directions for insertion(they are painless). Don't forget- Landing usually causes more ear troubles than takeoff, so get your Earplanes in a good 30 min. before the plane lands. Hope this helps. Threehearts

EARPLANES!!!!!!!

I am 36, have been flying since I was 7, and NEVER had a landing that did not reduce me to tears (I am also the poster child for ear problems). I found Earplanes about a year and a half ago, and I will never fly without them again. Well worth the price. I generally don't need them for takeoff, and put them in about an hour or so before landing.

I BOUGHT SOME FOR MY DAUGHTER AND MY SELF..
DO I LEAVE THEM IN THE WHOLE TIME?
WE ARE ONLY FLYING FROM DAYTON TO ATLANTA ( 1.5 HR)
AND THEN ATLANTA TO ORLANDO (1.5 HR AGAIN)

MOST OF MY EAR PAIN IS WHILE I AM IN THE AIR....
TAKE OFF & LANDING DONT SEEM TO BOTHER ME.

Just to add to LISALISA36's question...

Is it okay to put them in when the first sign of discomfort begins, or would that be too late?
I doubt that both kids will keep them in for a 2.5 hour flight, especially our 2yr old.

Thanks!!

My little guy has worn them since he's 4 & he keeps them in the whole flight (he just turned 6), with no argument. He's flown w/o them & knows there's a difference, plus it filters engine noise & he likes that too!!
PS. I wear them too & keep mine in the whole flight. That way I don't have to worry about altitude changes & they really do filter the noise.

To answer Mark P and lisaLisa36's questions...

Ear Planes are a wonderful invention! They are okay to leave in for the entire time but I find them annoying for a longer flight since they make hearing a bit muffled and give you that "I have no idea how loudly I'm speaking" feeling when you talk.

They need to be inserted at least 30 minutes prior to landing and not once discomfort starts. Their purpose is to help regulate the pressure so since the plane begins it descent quite a bit earlier than the actual landing time the 30 minute time frame gives your ears plenty of time to "adjust" to the changes in altitude.

I used to cry during landings and since using ear planes for the first time about 4 years ago I've been happy as can be!

:)

ps: My doctor also recommended taking a OTC decongestant (Sudafed) and giving a squirt of nasal spray (Afrin) before take-off so that your airways aren't blocked - I combine these with the Ear Planes just to be on the safe side.

Happy Flying!

I am another one that has trouble with my ears during landing. I have used Earplanes for the past couple of years and they do help. However, when flying last November, I had a head cold/stuffy nose and the earplanes didn't help when we landed in KC. The funny thing is I always have more trouble when we land in Kansas City or St. Louis than in Orlando. I don't know if this plays a part in it but the flight attendent told me that there is a steeper descent in KC than Orlando.

RamseyTrio, I am going to try the Sudafed and nasal spray along with the Earplanes from now on.

EARPLANES are lifesavers! I don't think I could get my DS(12) to fly if it weren't for them. He used to get such terrible pain usually during the descent before landing. But they must be inserted at least 30 minutes before landing in order to work. He wears them the whole flight (2.5 hrs from Philly to Orlando). Try them; even if your kids are little, they'll probably notice the difference once they see they work and want to keep them in. Good luck!

Different airports have different approaches/flight paths. For example, the approach to land at Logan is BRUTAL for me. They start stepping down in altitude about 45 minutes before we actually land, and it is in seemingly small increments, and tortuous to me (pre-airplanes). The approach/descent into MCO seems relatively quick, does not bother me nearly as much.

But...get those Earplanes. They certainly cannot hurt, and they can only help.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE INFO,,,I WILL WEAR MINE THE WHOLE TIME!

Add me to the EARPLANES bandwagon! I wore them the entire flight from PHL to MCO plus I took Sudafed and squirted the nasal spray (yuck). I had no problems at all. I got my kids their own as well and they had no problems either. Good luck!

I also swear by Ear Planes. They have been a lifesaver, after many painful flights before I heard of them. :( I also take Claritin D starting 2 days ahead of time (dr. order) and use Neo Synephrine the day of. All of that combined has worked out great. :D

Does anyone know if they sell these in Canada? In particular Quebec or Ontario?

Tks,
Sandy

Sandyrella,
If you use the link for Earplanes that was posted above, you'll see that they list several stores in Canada as stocking them. Good luck finding them, they're great!
