Flying Dutchman

After seeing this thread, I got a little worried. I called DCL and asked a few friends of mine that witll work for Disney. As far as any one knows right now, the Dutchman, is being renovated and refurbed, and she being removed from CC. By all consensus of the people I talked to, Id be looking to see her in one of the upcoming Pirates movies. There is no time frame if shes coming back, and no one mentioned the Pearl. One of the reasons that she is moved, is that there is concern that the prop wash from the bigger ships could conceivably move or damage the FD. Plus her deteriorating condition.

If the Dutchman is going to Hi, its not that hard to get her there. Towing her would be too long and costly, so the easier thing to do, would be to lift her out of the water and put her on the deck of another ship. Assuming thats where shes going to. There also filming in Puerto Rico. Theres a beach scene at the end of the movie.Id say thats the moer likely location for her to go to be filmed.

Assuming that what Im hearing is correct, its probably easier for Disney to pull all of the old set off the barge, and build brand new, and assuming that she is going to come back to CC, make her more weather proof.

We are just off the 11/14 cruise and the Flying Dutchman was not there. We saw pieces of it in a back area and it looked like it was being taken apart. I am assuming our cruise may have been the first since they started taking it apart, because I hadn't read anything here about it.

I will be sad to see the FD gone, but if the BP shows up that would be really awesome. I am going in April so hopefully something will be there. We are taking my DD's BF with us and she had told him about the FD being there so he seemed excited to see it so I'm not sure if I want to tell her about it or just wait until it gets closer to the time that we leave and see what's going on with that area.

I'm sad the FD will be gone for my Dec 12th cruise. I took some pictures last year of the FD and I guess that will have to do. Thanks for the heads up everyone.

When we were there in June the FD seemed to be really listing, and was not looking good. It will be really strange to see nothing where it used to be, but it will make for unobstructed shots of the Magic, Wonder, Dream and Fantasy. On the other hand if they bring in the Black Pearl that would be cool too...

She is definitely not being used for Pirates 4 as Jerry Bruckheimer twittered yesterday that they have completed filming the movie and are in post production now with a trailer coming on 12/17/10.

Here is the retweet that was posted:

"Congrats Jerry RT @BruckheimerJB: Officially wrapped PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES this week. Excited to share trailer 12/17"

I saw it being ripped apart...so did my 11 year old girl who started crying:(.

I have video, I'll try to post it soon.

We did hear from a fairly reliable source that its private owner will be rebuilding it, and that just the top and ends were being torn apart...which would make sense because why not just sink it, or wreck the whole thing instead of doing it little by little. Many of the staff have no idea what is going on and many tried to tell my kids that it was still there when asked where it went. My daughter spotted it from our verandah, it was quite sad, especially the pile of ship guts they tried unsuccessfully to hide behind a pile of rocks.

I was not thrilled this was going on while a ship was docked...it was loud and fairly traumatic for the kids.

I didn't read the whole post so sorry if this was already posted.

Just read the following in the Mouse for Less Newsletter:

"DCL NEWS & OTHER DISNEY DESTINATIONS

• The Flying Dutchman pirate ship at Disney's Castaway Cay is currently being refitted in preparation for a journey back to the sea. As all work for the Flying Dutchman's departure will take place during daylight hours, guests will likely hear and see maintenance staff and equipment. Work is scheduled to be completed by November 24, 2010. Where Captain Turner and the crew of the Flying Dutchman are headed, no one knows."

So sad.

This won't ruin my January cruise but it does change things. DCL for me is about the combination of all the little things. The Flying Dutchman was one of those little things that make the cruise experience complete. You won't see anything like it on other cruiselines.

I LOVE the pics we have in front of the FD. :(

Interesting. It sounds like they have no clue what they will do. Or maybe they just don't want to give too many details. Because from the pictures I am seeing, the FD will never sail again. But I could be wrong. pirate:

I just got back from our cruise. I asked our cruise director if it was coming back and he said no, but "You never know what ship might appear in its place" ;)

Guess we will just have to wait and see!! popcorn::

I must be the only person on the DIS who thought it was creepy, and totally ruined the look of the island.
I mean, here's this awesome, clean, beautiful space ....and there sat the ugly shell of a movie prop.

I'd been to Castaway Cay before it got there, and have been several times since it was there, and I like it better without.

Sorry....just my opinion.

Well for me, it wasn't that it added or took away from the atmosphere but it was just cool to know that I was at the ONLY private cruise island that had a REAL movie set from one of my favorite movies. pirate:

hmm 'private owner?' good bye FD hello BLACK PEARL!!

not a gambler, but i bet this or something like it is in order! Especially since PITC 4 is finished filming. Where is the FD now? is there some fancy retrofitting going on and maybe being relocated to CC??

We were surprised not to see the FD from our verandah yesterday. I asked Captain Jack where she went. He told me that William has taken her away...:3dglasses

While I have amazing pictures in front of the FD- I have to admit the view from the verandah is gorgeous and unspoiled, not looking into the back of a movie prop anymore. The view of the island is really spectacular.

I really hope they replace it with the BP! I just think there needs to be something there to represent Pirates of the Caribbean, ya know? Still for those who have been I'm sure it was disappointing to see the empty space where it used to be...

With the island expanding for Dream, seems like they may have something up there sleeve ;) Disney is full of surprises, so I'm sure they won't let us down!

Any hope a replacement/Black Pearl could be in place by, oh, mid-December? :rolleyes1
