Apparently, they had been practicing this for a while, and had hoped to do it in one of these last games. Revival of a lost art. Even Nick Saban (Miami coach) really appreciated it. It started with a conversation between Chris Berman where he told Bill Belichick that Flutie could do the drop kick and mentioning that it had been since 1941 since one had been done.
Don't know how closely anyone follows the Pats here, but I follow VERY closely and a few times this year, including last Friday, Belichick has invited the media into a screening room and shown game film and given football history talks. It's like a little media treat. One of those sessions was all about 1941, which also happened to heavily focus on his late father. It's obvious the year 1941 was chosen deliberately. I see the whole thing as being a nod to history and I think it is incredibly cool.
