Fluctuating hotel price?

I've been considering a trip mid October for a dose of Halloween, and I've been checking prices for the past few weeks. Every time I compared prices, they didn't change (pricing out SL, HNY and NPBC on the UK, French and Irish sites)...then last week the price for HNY went up by more than $240...and there it's stayed.

Can anyone explain why? I know prices go up for most anything the closer the date gets, but other hotels haven't changed...or do they raise the price of one in order to entice people to book other hotels that are a bit cheaper and perhaps not filling as well?

Might they lower the price back to where it was last week (I know one can't tell the future with this sort of thing, but is this the norm?)...I really wanted to try the HNY this time around, but it's now $414 more than the SL at this point....and I'm not sure bacon and eggs justify the price difference for me.

Maybe it works like airline tickets. Once they are filling up the last few places are more expensive. Supply and demand.
