So....is anybody worried re: cruising during what seems like a possible flu epidemic? I'd be very interested in hearing opinions on this.

No, I am not worried.

Life is full of risks, this is just another one.

If it happens, it happens.

I'm not worried about the flu. We could get that at home. I am a little concerned about getting sea sick. This is our first cruise. I check the wave levels every day. HAAAA!!!

but i wont let it ruin our vacation........i (as a matter of fact) am just getting over a sever bout of the flu. i lost 5 lbs in 2 1/2 days(im ok with that;) )but seriously, i have an infant that was 6 weeks early that had premature lungs and was in the hospital for over 3 weeks before coming home. on top of that, my 4 1/2 year old has already had the flu 2 times since september. she has a weak immune system. she only goes to pre-school 2 days a week for 2 hours, and still......2 weeks ago, (when she was sick)out of 20 kids in her class, 9 of them were out with the flu.prior to the "outbreak" one mother brought her son to school with a temp and snot(sorry) running down his chin:mad: . she dropped him in class and sped out the door. the school tried to call her, she was not at home and did not pick up her cell. at the end of class when she came to pick up her son, when confronted by another angry parent, she said she couldnt pick up the cell phone because she was at a job interview .can you believe it?she said she didnt know that he was sick.it is irresponsible and selfish parents like that who make a bad situation worse.
i know(i hope) that most all parents will do their part and keep sick kids confined to the cabin if they are sick and i will do the same. and purell and handwashing(for at least 15 seconds)can help, too.:sunny: sorry if i ranted...........:D

I am a little concerned, but I have taken precautions. I have packed clorox wipes and purell hand sanitizer. If that does not work, then oh well. I has been a year and a half waiting and the only thing that will get me down is death its self. After all you cannot get sick because with Disney you feel the magic and dreams do come true.

well we both had the flu on our last cruise:( We were quarenteened in the cabin for about 75% of the actual cruise due to it, and while it was sad we made the best out of it and had fun in the cabin. Dont worry to much. The guest relations will do almost anything to make it easier on you if it does happen.

I won't retell my whole story--but we just returned last Saturday and my daughter became very ill on Friday night-by Saturday she was hospitalized. I don't feel she was at any greater risk because she was on the ship than if she would have been at school, or shopping at the mall, etc. The ship was very clean, signs for handwashing posted everywhere, etc. But put 2600 people together in a confined space (even though it is large) and this is going to happen.

The only thing with being on the cruise was that it was so difficult to manage her illness while we were travelling. I would have much rather been at home. I am sure those on the airplane with us felt the same way, too.

I would take tylenol suppositories with me next time, though. The ship did not have them and I needed them for her fever since she was vomiting up any thing I gave her by mouth.

IMO, go on your trip, have a good time, be smart about handwashing and deal with it if it happens.

I am sorry your little one got sick on your cruise. This flu epidemic has us all worried. Here's wishing all stay healthy. Take care.

I"m not that worried about it as I'm already home with walking pneumonia anyway. You get what you get. The flu isn't that big down here in Florida yet, especially in Naples. But with all of the tourists coming here for vacation it will be here soon.
Hey, I'd rather be exposed to something while on the Magic rather here in my everyday life, at least I'm cruising!!!

We were on the 11/29 sailing. All was fine till the morning of departure. DH wasn't feeling all that well Saturday morning and by the time we arrived home he had the full blown flu. We were really careful with hand washing, Anti-bacterial wipes etc, but it still found us in the end. Don't get me wrong though-- we had a wonderful trip and it was worth it, even if we had to deal with the flu for a few days after we got home.

As I'm sitting here, DD and I both have some sort of upper respiratory infection. Many local schools are closed due to "flu". The news reports say that if all the people with respiratory illness are tested, over 50% have influenza A, while normally it is less than 5%.

SO....it can happen on a ship, at home, etc. ON Wednesday, I had a little scratchy throat...yesterday I was full blown SICK. I'm hoping that by having it now, I've warded off the evil spirits on the cruise. You do what you can, and take your chances. Around here, there has been no vaccine available...and even when they had it, the vaccine was to last year's strain, so that wasn't a full answer either.

I am concerned! but... We have all had the flue shots ( I understand that this season the flu is still hitting some people who have had the shots). DH has a lot of health problems and the flu would be very hard on him but when we did the land and sea last time he was on Chemo and still we had a wonderful time!

I have bought the sanitizing gel, spray, wipes etc. I have already started my lectures to DD age six about keeping her hands away from her face and washing hands all the time.

I'll be the one with the big smile but very little hand shaking:earsgirl: Everything in life has a risk, DH got sick almost
4 years ago and Disney land and sea was the first vacation we were able to take after he got ill. I'll never forget the kindness of
everyone on this board checking things out for me, making my trip so much easier on DH because I had the inside scoop on everything and had it all planned to a T!

This is now our third Disney trip in as many years, the flu outbreak is just one more small bump in the road to try to miss.
We leave for Disney Dec. 29th and will be on the Wonder Jan 4th.

We'll be on the same cruise with you (Wintermom), and trying to take all necessary precautions! We didn't get the vaccines, so we've been praying for the last month! At this point all shots left are reserved for only the high-risk patients. Hoping the latest cold-snap will kill off the bugger! My sister had heard from a friend that if you put Bacitracin salve on your nostrils that helps with the bacteria-spread illnesses. She tried it on her latest trip home for Thanksgiving and was the first airline trip she had taken and didn't get some sort of the crud. I have some and we'll also add that to the preventative measures when we fly south.

I fly every week and don't really believe this theory that flights give people the "crud". I figure I would be dead by now if it was really true.

I think the flu shot did do some good. I have not gotten the flu and my boyfriend and several others I hang around with have. (And none of them got the shot!) I got it WAY back in October which was well before the current shortage.

My big concern is my niece and newphew picking it up at school next week! YIKES!!!

Bacitracin is a topical antibiotic ointment. If put on an open wound it promotes healing. If put by or in the nostrils it may "kill" the normal bugs that we have in our noses that filter out the bad bugs. I'd leave the ointment for cuts.

hi guys we have heard about a remedy called zi cam has anybody got any info about it :D

Just returned from the Wonder 4night cruise!

Contracted Norwalk, was confined to my cabin for 48 hours by orders of the Disney Wonder - but my 48 hours did not expire until 9 am on day of getting off the ship - but they told me I must go to immigration at 6 am!!! But still they insisted I could not come out to enjoy myself until my 48 hours was past!!!!

They insisted I stay in my cabin for 48 hours from last symptom to avoid infecting the ship, yet when it suited them - they insisted I go to immigration and mingle with others before my 48 hours was up!!

Work that one out if you can?

I have lots more to tell, and wll do so shortly - we have had a terrible time on the Wonder.

Rosemary

well I am now on my second round of the flu:( Rosemary, I can understand your disappointment. I was also confined to the stateroom for 90 percent of my cruise. I made the best I could out of it, but I know how hard it was for me. I think the reason you had to be there for imigration had nothing to do with being confined to the room, by law you have to report or it holds up the entire ship. I understand the confusion though. I hope things are better. I had the regular flu on board and also norwalk so I know where you are coming from. Hang in there.
