Flu shot 2021

Wow. I’m surprised they’re doing them together. I thought you had to wait a week at least between them.

It was originally suggested to have two weeks between the covid vaccine and other vaccinations if the vaccinations were not done at the same time. That recommendation was lifted a while ago.

When I got my third dose last week I could have gotten my influenza one as well except they were not doing them that day; I was told I could come back any time they were doing them to get it and did not need to wait the two weeks that one had previously needed to [and given the explanation about how the guidance had changed].

Kiddo just got three vaccines at school (grade 7 so I don't even know what they are) but they made me confirm he wasn't less than 28 days after his covid vaccine. He is but I am glad to read they've changed that.

You’re lucky Ottawa is doing those grade 7 vaccines. Peel has suspended these until further notice. So far we have three cohorts that haven’t received the grade 7 vaccines. I paid out of pocket ($800) so far to have my GP jab my twins. By the time I’m done, it will cost upwards of $2000.

The shots are for Hep B, meningitis and HPV. All very important vaccines.

The grade 8's were getting theirs done as well, I guess they skipped them last year. Jackson was funny, he wasn't at all bothered by getting 3 needles, he was upset the guy doing them tried to have a conversation with him which made him even later for Gym, and he said he could feel one of them moving through his body... I guess they do dose 2 in the spring. I was glad they were this week and not next since we'll be away. I'm surprised they cost anything though, HPV should be covered, they offered it to me a few years ago, and I'm sure they did meningitis even when I was a kid. Hep B I got when I worked in a hospital, it was required (they did blood work to prove I was still immune to chicken pox and a few other things, and I had TB test as well). I think maybe that one costs but it was covered because of my job.

They cost money when you don’t get them through public health. I just had the head of Peel public health call me personally. Didn’t speak to him. He left a message. I think I made him mad when I wrote to him that the clinics need to resume. He said I need to have sympathy for the nurses on the front lines. Which I absolutely do. It can’t be ignored though, that other very important public health issues are being ignored. It’s not okay that children are missing out on routine vaccination.

That would be really frustrating. I'll be honest, I didn't know about these vaccines until the school sent home the paperwork. I assume the family doctor or public health would have let me know at some point they were missing (if the school didn't do them). The information from the school was that I would have to contact public health if we missed the clinics and the meningitis is required to attend school (I guess the others are optional?)

Halton isn't doing their vaccines through the schools, right now, either. We had DS get HPV a few years ago through our doctor... $300.

I'm in the Fraser Health region of BC and we just got our letter this week for the grade 6&7 kids this week, their shots will be administered in school the first week of November. If they were not going in schools this year, the public health office would call us to book her in for her shot(s) in their clinic. It would never be a cost here in BC, I'm shocked people have to pay in other provinces!

I don’t have to pay. I could wait until some undetermined date when they resume vaccinations.

I was able to book an appointment for oct 29th at Rexall in BC. I signed up for notifications anywhere I could and rexall was the first to send me an email to book. Last year I wasn’t able to get one every appt I made was canceled for supply issues.

Funny enough, my current work is on just that - maintaining other essential health services (including routine immunizations) and the long-term impact that not doing so is going to have. Though I mainly work with low- and lower middle-income countries, so for immunizations we are talking about things like DPT, MCV, and polio.

You’re doing important work. I think we will see an impact due to putting off things such as immunisation, cancer screening, etc.

Somethings you might find interesting - https://www.who.int/teams/integrate...-health-services-during-the-covid-19-pandemic

And, yes, fully agree. Both near-term impact and long-term impact. It's a tough balancing act and, of course, a lot of the countries the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic are the ones with the least resources and were already struggling to provide essential services.

hubby got jabbed on Friday when he was at the doctor for an appointment and I had mine at Rexall this morning. They had put a consent form in with my last script and I just booked the appointment online. All shot up now and still nowhere to go 🤪

I booked appointments at Costco for DH and myself for Friday and DS next Wednesday.

Got an email from Rexall this afternoon so I booked with them for tomorrow afternoon. Will cancel Costco when we get home from Rexall with shots in arms. Sooner is better than later when they may run out, who knows what the supply level is like at an individual location.

We all got ours yesterday...me, DH, DS, DDinlaw, DDinlaw's mom, DSinlaw. DD and the oldest little got theirs last week or so. Got them at Sobeys. They have a ton of appointments open at pharmacyappointments.ca

Just the one year old babies need to get theirs now and apparently they aren't in the Doctor's offices yet.

I called my local pharmacy 2 weeks ago and they put me on a call list for when my 50+ age group opened. Got my shot a while ago. Told only the 75+ age group really showing any interest in getting the flu shot this year and lots of supply because of low demand. Surprised because last year at this time Ontario pharmacies couldn't meet the demand and many went without. Wondering if people are just vaxxed out with mental fatigue and putting it off or ignoring the flu shot. Worrying because now is not the time to be lax and cut corners. Also wonder if triaging the flu shot by age group and vulnerability is backfiring. A general cattle call like we always used to do might have been more effective for getting shots in arms. No psa or adverts urging us to get the flu shot so def under the radar.

It is. It's Nov right now and our family of 5 still can't get on anything but waitlists here. The PHU isn't even doing clinics, so it's pharmacy or nothing. We probably won't bother this year then - they're making it too hard.
